I want to enable a second router (so that my older laptop can connect and use the internet)

I'd like to add my OLD router (dlink) as a secondary access  -- I have a laptop that does NOT connect to the new xfinity router I have -- I was told that is because it has a newer protocol that my older laptop does NOT work with.

That laptop DOES work with the older router, so I'd like to set that up attached to the xfinity (via ethernet) so that I can connect the laptop to THAT router and get access to the internet.

Personally, i would consider getting a Usb wifi high speed adapter, they are under $15, it would give you access to the 5 g band, much faster speeds, it should connect easily to the new gateway

Hey @jlg_07, thank you for reaching out to us on our forums. Jlavaseur has some good points and options to get better performance. The XB7 runs WiFi 6 (802.11ax) and many older laptops can not connect or see it. It is a good idea to check with the connecting device's manufacturer to see if there is an update available for WiFi 6. As far as using the old modem, you should be able to use it as a side car or plugged into the XB7. Things to watch out for are WiFi crosstalk or interference having both broadcasting. Like mentioned though, there are other ways to get a better connection.

It can be done, but you will probably be limiting anything connected to it, to 100 Mbps, the Xb7 is backwards compatible for “G” and “N” bands, your WiFi card might fall into that category, with some tweaking it’s possible your computer can actually connect to the Xb7, I have done it

Unfortunately, using two routers as you want to is not as easy as you may think. I would encourage you to follow the advice given you by jlavaseur; it is a much less complicated matter.  Just disable the onboard wireless and use the dongle.
