Good news: We've boosted your Internet speed

I am definitely paying way too much for Performance Internet! Everybody tells me this and it doesn't matter that I've been a customer for decades.

I received an Xfinity email back on October 2022 stating that they've increased my 100 Mbps (yes that's right, nearly $80 per month for measly 100 Mbps speeds) UP TO 200 Mbps connection.

I keep checking, the most I get is 134 Mbps, only increasing from about 120 Mbps. WHERE IS THE 200 Mbps connection?

Welcome to the Xfinity Forum and thank you for posting your question here. While newer devices should be able to handle greater speeds over WiFi, older devices may not do as well – even under ideal conditions. For faster speeds, try using an Ethernet connection instead. Speeds through a hardwired connection are naturally faster than speeds over WiFi because of potential wireless interference.

To help you better understand what download speeds can be expected over WiFi with your service, we’ve calculated the expected WiFi throughput of some of today's leading devices using millions of speed test results.

You can look up the expected speed of your device and other popular devices using our Xfinity xFi Speed Test tool.

It's important to check your Xfinity Internet service plan from the Devices page on xfinity.com (scroll down to Data Usage Overview) My Account to confirm the maximum download speed regardless of device capabilities.

Additionally, the following minimum system recommendations for your connected devices will ensure you’re getting the most out of your Xfinity Internet service.

If you meet the requirements but are not achieving the speed for your subscribed speed tier, please note:

  • To achieve the upper range of your speed tier, you must be connected via a wired Ethernet connection.
    • Speeds through a hardwired connection are inherently faster than speeds over WiFi due to potential wireless interference.
  • There are a number of external factors that may limit your speed; as a result, actual speeds may vary.
    • External factors that could impact speeds include:
      • External interference
      • Downloads/uploads in progress
      • Open programs on your devices
      • Number of devices connected to your home network
  • Whenever possible, your Xfinity Gateway should be placed in a central, unobstructed location of your home, off the floor and away from other electronic devices.

Make sure that your internet equipment is up-to-date and able to support the speeds on your package. (For example, a DOCSIS 3.0 Internet device will not support Gigabit speeds from Xfinity.) You can check to see if you’re eligible for an equipment update at xfinity.com/equipmentupdate.

System Recommendations by Speed Tier

Xfinity Internet Minimum System Requirements — For Speeds up to 2 Gigabits per second
Operating System Windows 10 (64-bit) or Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite or newer.

Visit the Microsoft Windows lifecycle fact sheet or Mac OS X Support overview for their latest operating system information.
Browser Google Chrome 56.0.2924, Microsoft Edge (64-bit), Mozilla Firefox 52 (64-bit) or Safari 8 or newer. For more information about different browsers or to download a new one, visit whatismybrowser.com.
Ethernet For maximum speeds of 1 Gbps to 1.2 Gbps, your desktop or laptop will need a 1G copper Ethernet interface and a 1G Ethernet adapter. These will need to be paired with a Cat5e (or better) Ethernet cable.

For maximum speeds of 2 Gbps on a single computer, you will need the following:
  • A desktop computer with available PCIe expansion slot.
  • A 10G PCIe network interface controller (NIC) adapter with small form-factor pluggable (SFP) cage.
  • A 10G enhanced, 850nm multimode fiber (MMF), small form-factor pluggable (SFP) transceiver.
  • A multimode fiber (MMF) LC patch cable.
For maximum speeds of 2 Gbps on more than one of your devices connected to the fiber handoff, you will need a compatible router or firewall with throughput of 2 Gbps (or greater) along with the following:
  • A 10G router or firewall.
  • A 10G 850nm multimode fiber (MMF), small form-factor pluggable (SFP) transceiver.
  • All of the additional equipment from the single computer requirements for each connected computer to reach 2 Gbps from the router or firewall. The actual number of devices and configurations supported varies by the brand and model of the router or firewall.

To achieve maximum speeds of 2 Gbps over a longer Ethernet cable lengths, Cat6 or Cat6a cables are required.
CPU/Processor Quad-Core Intel Core i7 (or faster) processor, 16 GB of RAM and requires a solid-state drive (SSD).

For additional information see these helpful articles, What Wifi Speeds to Expect with Your Xfinity Internet Service and Xfinity Internet Minimum System Requirements

If you continue to experience slowness when connected via an Ethernet connection and meet all the minimum system requirements, feel free to share your recent modem logs for additional assistance.

I to received a notification last October 27th, 2022 from Xfinity via text on my cell. It stated that " We increased your current internet download speeds from 100 Mbps to up to 200 Mbps for no additional charge". Thought to myself how cool.

Should have known there was a catch to this in some way!

My Xfinity plan was set to 100 Mbps and was reaching speeds as fast as 118 Mbps on a normal, everyday basis. I was cool with that. Never had any issues with my plan as it was.

So the first thing I did was checked my download speed only to find out speed had not increased. Three days later I checked again, yes it got faster went from my usual 118 Mbps to a whopping 134 Mbps the best speed I've seen so far. Not to seem unappreciative for the increase but like I said should have known there would be a catch, there was. For an increase in speed of 16 Mbps and a very sporadic loss of internet connection. Sometimes as long as 5 minutes, no rhyme or reason to when this happens and at any time day or evening continuously. Never had any issues before the increase now well lets just say I am not a happy camper anymore!

Of coarse I did see the disclaimer " Actual speeds vary "  but no mention of the internet connection issue as part of the speed increase Package. Thank you Xfinity another satisfied customer.

I'm curious to what the date was in October 2022 that you received your speed increase notification? It also must be just a coincidence that we both boosted to 134 Mbps.

                                                                                   Thanx Bmac

@user_d3ed61

Welcome to the Xfinity Forum and thank you for posting your comments here. Are you connecting to the Internet via an ethernet cable or via WiFi? As mentioned in my previous message on this thread, we recommend testing while on a device directly connected to your modem via an ethernet cable. This will ensure that you receive the most accurate speed test results. Please note, due to device, signal, and location based interference, no Internet service provider can guarantee speeds via Wifi.

We look forward to your response and your results when directly connected via that ethernet cable.

I posted this two days ago on Jan 6th but it never showed up, so again:

Just a quick follow up I'll try to block out 2 to 4 hours this weekend to study this and reconfigure my system just to see is I can get close to the 200 Gbps speeds. I know some Comcast people and they tell me 'doubtful' but I'll give it a go any way. Maybe this will justify why I'm paying $82/mo just for internet access.
