GitHub Maxes Out at 1Mb/sec on 1G Connection
GitHub maxes out at 1Mb/sec and goes as slow as 300Kb/sec. This really hurts
me and my company with the large software development projects I work on.
Has anyone else noticed this?
I got a new modem from Comcast when having other problems with bandwidth,
and now I'm getting 600Mb/sec on the Comcast test (and 900Mb/sec wired),
which means the connection itself is at least 75% okay. But Speakeasy speed test
to destinations except Seattle (where I get 400Mb/sec) doesn't go above 50Mb/sec.
This definitely isn't GitHub itself. My coworker in Santa Clara gets much
faster checkouts (at exactly the same time) than I'm getting.... Git takes 17sec
for this clone command on my coworker's computer:
time git clone https://github.com/Telenav/kivakit.git
My computer gets 1:34 sec. About 6x slower. This is 100% repeatable. HTTPS versus
SSH doesn't make ANY difference.
Also it is definitely the provider. I worked with this same repository in Flagstaff using
Suddenlink and never had any problem. It also verifies that it's not the protocol.
Using my company's VPN just decreases the speed further:
Santa Clara checkout from internal repo: 28 seconds
Albuquerque checkout of same repo over VPN: 11 minutes 23 seconds
The only idea I can come up with is that Comcast is throttling connections. It doesn't
make a whole lot of sense to throttle Github though. Word would get around about
that pretty fast, and there are much bigger bandwidth hogs than git.
So, what is it?

Hi @XfinityLinda
I already went through support up to the advanced network team.
I do have some more information (see below).
It looks like there could be significant packet loss on the route between me and GitHub.
The packet loss is occurring on Comcast internal backbone links, as I suggested.
There could be other reasons for this statistic showing up, but it's worth following up on.
Since the advanced network team refused to look into the problem ("third party"), maybe you could find a way?
Best,
Jon

I'm definitely seeing this problem at my home in Santa Clara CA, on a 500Mbps connection. If I restart the router and start a github clone over SSH it goes upto 15 MiB/s but then after a couple of minutes it grinds down to 300KiB/s. Is there anyway I can get some support on this? Its completely crippling my ability to do any work.
