DNS stopped working all of the sudden

Sometime around midnight (PST) this morning (2025/03/17), Xfinity stopped sending DNS
All devices in the house (computers, phones, TVs, etc...) stopped resolving names, so definitely something upstream and not connected to an individual device
I am usually asleep at that time so the family just went to bed
An odd message in the modem log at 00:01 (Received Response to Broadcast Maintenance Request, But no Unicast Maintenance opportunities received - T4 time out) but otherwise nothing out of the ordinary
Restarted everything, no fix
Configured our router to use a public DNS and all is working perfectly

What happened?
Did some change go out at midnight last night? The timing seems very suspicious
Since adding the public DNS everything is working, full speed an no errors - no doubt it is something upstream...

I am certainly comfortable leaving it like this, but would like to know what happened and if there might be issues in the future

Thanks!

Final: No obvious reason why this would fail, but sticking with a standard public DNS as it seems to be faster and less prone to disappearing

Hey there, Merlista, thanks for reaching out through Xfinity Forums regarding your account. We would be happy to help you with troubleshooting any issues you are having with your connection. Are you still noticing this same issue with your DNS? Were any changes made to your network setup since you noticed this issue?

No, we don't change our network, especially not at midnight, when I am asleep!!!

I was hoping something changed on the upstream end - there was a notice on the modem log (see original post) that seems like it came from external

I will try turning off our DNS override this weekend to see if it starts working again

However, it seems more stable defining our own DNS - so we may stick with it

Thanks for getting back to me!
