Android apps will not open on xfinity wifi

There have been similar postings, but xifinity seems to deflect...android apps are opening on ALL OTHER wifi and cell networks, but when logged on to my xfinity home account they time out.  How is this a phone problem...the common denominator is xfinity.

@user_12ef5f  Thank you for reaching out on the Xfinity Community Forums. We are happy to assist you with your account. Have you attempted to completely power down the modem from the power outlet and let it boot back up? Are you still seeing this as an issue? Please let us know if you need assistance.

yes, i have completely shut down, set router to default, and called tech support.  since posting, after many attempts, i was able to open the xfinity app and looked at the security mode.  the default was WPA2.  i changed the to WPA/WPA2 and restarted the router.  all apps open perfectly for approximately a 15 minute window then would time out again.  i restarted the router a 2nd time, but no change.  i changed the security mode again with a restart, another 15 minute window opened up before shutting down.

i have since ordered a basic wifi router.  the plan is to daisy chain through the Xfinity router with a cat cable and connect the phone through the new wifi router.  if successful and the apps will open, then we'll look harder at the xfinity router.

If you are hanging a stand-alone / separate router off of the gateway device, and the gateway is not in *bridge mode*, you are cascading 2 routing devices which results in an undesirable "double NAT" condition on your home network.

Google "double NAT" for info about its potential pitfalls. You really should put it in to bridge mode. Here's how;

Thanks for sharing the steps that you have done to remedy this situation, @user_12ef5f.

I would be more than happy to set a personal reminder to follow up with you through here after the new router has been installed and tested. Do you know when it will be delivered?

got it...remember, this is just a trouble shooting step to try and isolate the problem, not a permanent solution.

i'll follow the steps outline below this weekend and report back.

Update:

I have isolated the problem, wasn’t the router, but with the Xfi Pod.

As discussed, I made the daisy chain connection, while un-bridging the Xfinity router.  All my android apps opened immediately.  I set the network back to its original state, re-verifying the apps would not open.  For some reason, I removed the Xfi pod from the wall outlet located in my living room. I went to my phones wifi and toggled it off and then back on, all the problem apps I tried instantly open.

After about 30 minutes, I placed the pod back into the wall outlet, gave it sometime to reset, toggled the phones wifi, only to have the app problem return.  I cycle through these steps maybe a half dozen times before leaving the pod offline for the evening.  I woke this morning with all my apps working, thus I’m leaving the pod dis-connected from the system.

Now, begging the questions:

  • is anyone with the same app problem have a pod on their network?
  • Is the problem inherently with the pods?
  • Is this an updated firmware issue?

Looking forward for feedback.

We're having the same app issues - so annoying! And yes, we have a pod, so thanks for sharing your discovery about that. Although without the pod, we can't stream shows on our bedroom TV very well, which is probably more annoying.
