Streaming error TVAPP-00236 - unsupported display

I have been using xFinity streaming successfully for years, and suddenly I have a problem today.  My setup has not changed, I have not installed any new software, there have been no changes to my network.

 

I have a MacBook Pro (2019), running Catalina 10.15.5

Running Safari 13.1.1

External display is a Cisco DX80, connected via (genuine) Apple display adapter and HDMI

 

When I try to stream content while the external display is connected, I get error code TVAPP-00236, with the message that my display is unsupported and I should connect a supported display or use an Apple display adapter.

 

I have rebooted both the MacBook and the DX80.  I have plugged the display adapter into each of the four USB-C ports on the Mac.  I have tried another Apple display adapter, all result in the same error message.

 

Hmmm, well, this display, in this very same configuration worked just fine yesterday (and for a couple of years), and I AM using an Apple display adapter.

 

Streaming works just fine if I disconnect the display (however, that is not ideal, since I need the display real estate.)

 

Thanks in advance for any insight into what might be happening here, and potential fixes.

My Mac is 10.15.5 and Safari 13.1.1.  Since these are up to date and used by 90% plus of all Mac users, it makes no sense that they would not be recognized by Xfinity.  The sad thing is that I am not surprised.

Hello,

 

We have recently updated our Web Application which transitions playback from Flash to HTML5.

 

HTML5 playback is not compatible with older Mac versions, requiring at least Mac OS 10.14.4 (this can be updated in the App Store) and Safari 12 or 13.

 

If you are experiencing trouble streaming to a second monitor or display, ensure that you are using HDMI, DisplayPort, or a certified Apple adapter as other connections may be unsupported for HTML5 playback.

 

Alternatively, you can try streaming from a different browser such as Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.

Hello @gtower,

We are sorry for this frustrating experience but thank you for your patience and for providing us with this information.

We can see when your device has experienced the TVAPP errors and confirmed that they occurred after update to the latest Web Application. We would like to investigate further but will require some information on what display you are attempting to stream on - such as the make and model of the display and the cord used to connect (if using an external display).

It is an Insignia Model : NS-19E310A13    The model does not support HDMI so it is connected via an adapter.  I was able to watch CNBC daily until maybe a week ago.

Just started having this problem today, after a long time of no problem.

~~~FIXED IT~~~

--Using Safari.

--On MacBook Pro with HDMI adapter (non-Apple) going to TV/monitor for second screen. 

--Got the error on both screens trying to watch Xfinity through Safari (though Opera was fine).

FIX: I quit Safari first. Then I disconnected the HDMI adapter from my MacBook, waited a few seconds, then plugged it back in. Then I disconnected the HDMI cable from the adapter, then plugged it back in.

Started Safari. Brought up Xfinity stream directory. Chose a show to play. NO MORE ERROR.

Same here.  Looks like my adapter is a third party;  I don't see an Apple emblem on it.  I still don't see why that would matter.   I can stream content from other websites just fine.

Hello @gtower,

We have looked up the monitor model and it appears that you can only connect via VGA adapter, but please correct us if we are wrong.

Unfortunately, this playback on Safari requires HDMI or Displayport connection. You may be required to try a different monitor or use a separate browser.

What I don't understand is why I can't use the iMac's native monitor.  That makes no sense.

I am still having trouble.

 

The lastest verson of Safari 14.0.1 and macOS 10.15.6.  I can playback video just fine if my second monitor is not connected.  So, browser obviously works so to heck with the idea that there is a flash vs html5 TS-Stream going on and at fault.  This is just another dodge of the issue saying that it's a problem with the end user and not taking responsibility for thier own problems.

 

If it was my browser or OS then why can I play it without second monitor/TV??  That is the question.

 

When I want to view a program, I have to disconnect the second monitor.  I am running apps in my day to day work that require second monitor, so I gotta stop working just to watch/listen to a show in the background?

 

I guess the technician will come back, oh but you have an iPad or iPhone that you could watch it from.  Well yea sometimes... But I grew to like the webpage i could load up on the mac and watch a show or just listen to it while I am getting other things done.  Now, you have me re-configuring my apps every time I disconnect my secondary display adapter.   Just not convient like it used to be.  And it's not on my side.  Some property is changed on server side.

Solved by installing and using Google Chrome Browser. While I didn't want to use Chrome either, Safari won't work to use Xfinity Stream via Apple TV AirPlay.

Don't fight it, use Chrome and put a smile on your face (and on those who were waiting for you to make it work).
