connect a western digital my cloud

@ComcastEthan

this is related to wire devices.

I am trying to connect a western digital my cloud. Directly wiring with ethernet is just simply not working for some reason. The port lights on both devices are not blinking, or even showing yellow. My cloud device is not showing up as a connected device so I don’t think it is communicating at all with the router modem combo.

have other people had trouble connecting my cloud devices or network attached storage. Are there any settings I can change on the router to get them to communicate?

thanks

Hello, @Millermk. Thanks for taking the time to reach out to us here on the Xfinity Forums for support.

While you've been troubleshooting, have you had the opportunity to either connect that device directly to your modem (bypassing the router) just to see if it connects that way?

Alternatively, have you tried to connect another ethernet device to the same cable you are trying to use for your My Cloud to see if it has a connection at all? Perhaps a laptop or gaming console?

We look forward to your update so we can help you get to the bottom of this! :)

Western Digital continues to be plagued by numerous vulnerabilities.  Several have been found over the course of the last 8 months.  Make sure that you visit the Western Digital support page for your exact make and model of My Cloud, update as needed, and make sure that your firewall and antivirus is up to date.  I have disconnected my My Cloud devices from my network until such a time as they work out the issues plaguing their firmware. Just do a google search for Western Digital My Cloud Vulnerability...the number will be astounding.

I'm considering a Western Digital My Cloud.  Is that not a good option? Is there a better recommendation? (Which forum can I find recommend NAS devices on)

Thanks for any help

@user_e0b4e6 There is an ongoing issue with WD My Cloud devices; they are vulnerable to attack. I posted a link earlier in this thread.  There are other brands and devices available, to include NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices, but many of them are also vulnerable due to issues with hardware and firmware.  There is no option for the casual user that is truly secure.

You may consider using a service such as Onedrive, Google drive, etc.  You upload the files that you want to be able to access there, and you can access them from any device.

Exposing your home network to external access is not something that should be done unless you understand how to secure it.  It you are using a modem/router supplied by xfinity, it is even riskier.

I always suggest anyone who asks not to put any cloud devices or share any part of their network outside their own network.  Use a service like I mentioned above. If you have files you want to access when away from home, you could store them in a folder that syncs with whatever service you choose, and those files can be accessed from anywhere.
