Xfinity Stream & Amazon Fire TV Stick

Using Xfiinity Stream app with an Amazon Fire TV Stick and getting a location issue on some stations and a please connect to your in-home wifi (unknown SSID) on others.  These messages are coming from the Xfinity Stream app.  I am at home and I am connected to my home Xfinity WiFi and able to run other streaming apps (Netflix, Peacock, Prime, etc.) without any issue.

I've been through 3 different Amazon Fire TV Sticks with the same result.  How does the Xfinity Stream app determine if I'm on my home network or not?

Hello, @kszczerba sorry to read Xfinity Stream is giving location issues on some stations please connect to your in-home Wi-Fi (unknown SSID) on others. Have you created an Amazon account and linked it to your compatible Amazon Fire TV device before downloading the Xfinity Stream app? Are the channels giving this error a part of a Xfinity channel package or free channels for non-Xfinity TV customers? Also, are you getting any specific (APP) error codes; for example APP-3329?

The Xfinity Stream app is available to all customers with Xfinity service, including Xfinity TV customers and internet customers without Xfinity TV. Features and content vary depending on your services. See the Eligibility section above for more details. Most Amazon Fire TVs and Fire sticks are compatible with the Xfinity Stream app. For supported versions, see Xfinity Stream app minimum system requirements. Visit the Amazon Appstore to download the latest version.

No error code besides “unknown ssid” or local channels not available due to not on home network. I am on my home network and I am an Xfinity cable subscriber, the app works fine on my Samsung, iPad, and iPhone. I did sign on with my Amazon account number. On the fire stick, The proper channel guide shows and my local DVR recordings. And I can see the fire stick on my Xfinity WiFi device list. The fire stick is the 4K Select version. I have reset, signed out, and reinstalled the fire stick and Xfinity app, and internet box. Nothing has worked.

user_nvlo21 Thank you for all the details — it sounds like you’ve done everything correctly, and we understand how frustrating this must be. Since you’re on your home network and signed in properly, the “Unknown SSID” message on Fire TV is likely a device-specific connectivity issue.

Here’s what to try next:

  1. Forget and reconnect to your Xfinity Wi-Fi on the Fire TV.

  2. Restart your Fire TV in Safe Mode or perform a full power cycle (unplug 1–2 minutes).

  3. Ensure the Fire TV software is fully updated.

  4. Check that your Xfinity Gateway’s 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands are both active — sometimes Fire TV defaults to one.

If the issue persists, send a direct message with your name and service address so we can review your account and push any needed settings to the device.

To send a "Direct Message":

Click "Sign In" if necessary

Click the "Direct Messaging" icon at the top of the page (it looks like a text bubble)

Click the "New message" (pencil and paper) icon

Type "Xfinity Support" in the "To:" line and select "Xfinity Support" from the drop-down list that appears. The "Xfinity Support" graphic replaces the "To:" line

Type your message in the text area near the bottom of the window

Press Enter to send it

FYI -- after an extensive google search I discovered that there is a known issue with the latest version of OS on the Amazon Fire Stick 4K Select that makes it incosistent with the Xfinity Stream app.  The work around is to get an older version of Fire Stick with the a compatible OS.  That's what I did and I'm working just fine.

What is disappointing is that Amazon did not fully test all the apps (especially Xfinity Stream) to ensure full capability.
