Why tv turns on randomly

Why is my TV turning on by itself. 3rd time this has happened? What's Comcast up to?

Hello, @user_9ab9d7. Welcome to the Xfinity Forums!

It definitely sounds like you've got a bit of a strange problem going on there with your TV.

If you think it may be due to your Xfinity remote, you could try removing the batteries from the remote when not in use to see if you still experience the same issue.

This may give you a better idea if this is due to our remote or maybe something else. :)

Please give that a try and keep us updated!

Same here!  We have removed batteries from  Xfinity and tv remote.  The same issue, tv is still turning on itself.  It’s weird because it only does when it’s expected to watch television.  It Happens usually in the morning, during the day or at night around 10.  I checked my network to see if anyone has been using my Internet.  I did find a couple of unknown devices on the network.  I paused the unknown devices to test to see if this problem would reoccur.  I will keep you updated.

The same thing has happened to two of our three TV's, as well as one smart lamp (bulb), on three separate occasions. Funny, only those items that are hooked up to our xfinity wi-fi are turning on. Our other lamps and third TV never does this. At first we thought it was a ghost just wanting to watch TV or messing with us, but we're pretty convinced now that it's the wi-fi. :)

It's happening to my new Samsung 43" Crystal tu7000 tv.  Didn't happen the first few months... I experimented w/ it and it seems to be the Xfinity cable box and the HDMI connection to our TVs.  I disconnected the Xfinity cable and HDMI cable from my tv and when i went to turn the tv off it stayed off even w/ the BOX still on.  Now when i turned off the tv w/ the Xfinity cable box + HDMI plugged in the TV  the cable box would turn off w/ the TV... but then cable box would flash green back on and moments later the tv would come back on.  It's the box interacting w/ the tv perhaps needing an update or what not.  THE BOX is doing it and communicating w/ the TV even when it's off making it come back on.  Just find that solution... I'm guessing it's either the wifi connection, box communicating w/ the TV when off and it's turning on.   Experiment final conclusion to having it fixed updated:  Alright what i did was disconnect the XFINITY power cord to the cable box w/ the TV on.  Wait about a minute and replug the cable box power cord back in and follow the prompts to activate your remote w/ your TV.  So far it has worked and both the TV and cable box stayed off and neither turned back on.  Probably have to reset the box every 2 months or so... Goodluck

Hi! Thank you for your response. Have you tried any of the steps provided by us in this thread to see if those steps helped?

I purchased a new Fire TV Oct 2020. Four days ago I decided to switch from CenturyLink to Comcast. Now during the night, the TV turns on by itself which NEVER happened before. This coincides with the start time for a recording. Since I had zero problems before installing, this problem is related to Comcast equipment. Last night as a test, I turned the TV sound down to zero, clicked mute, and manually turned off the TV. The TV turned on and with a normal sound level. This is not a random accident. Unless I can find a solution, I will be switching back to CenturyLink.

This problem might seem minor. However, imagine being woken up in the middle of the night thinking people have broken into your house.

Hello. Thank you for engaging with us in the Forum space. I have kids, and understand when unexpected noises happen. If you’re an Xfinity X1 customer, your TV Boxes will automatically restart once per day to ensure that you have all of the latest software. This restart, also known as Daily Update Time, happens by default between 3:00 AM and 4:00 AM local time. You can change this here.👍

I no longer work for Comcast.

This still does not fix the problem of my TV turning on randomly! Now it does it during the day! The problem is on your end. The only permanent fix seems to be dropping Xfinity?

@user_97529d This is a very interesting problem that I had in the past. @user_ce8549 I think is on the right path! The way that fixed the issue was to change some settings which I will go over below. The issue was with HDMI-CEC. This may or may not be your issue, but it's worth a shot to try this out.

HDMI-CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) is a cool feature which basically let's a TV remote control devices connected to the TV via HDMI cord. This may reduce the need for a universal remote.

There have been reports of HDMI-CEC causing devices to turn off and on unwantedly.

Let's try to turn the feature off to see if it fixes the issue. Below are the steps. Let us know how it worked!

HDMI Device Control (HDMI-CEC)

Xi6 Wireless TV Boxes (X1 and Flex), Pace Xi5 TV Boxes (X1 and Flex), Pace XiD TV Boxes (X1) and XG1v4 DVR TV Boxes (X1) connected to your TV via HDMI cable are capable of the HDMI Device Control (HDMI-CEC) feature. This will place your TV Box in Standby mode whenever your TV is turned off and will automatically wake it up when the TV is turned on.

This feature is turned on by default. You can turn it off by going to Settings > Device Settings > Power Preferences > HDMI Device Control (HDMI-CEC) > Off or On.

If anyone is having the issue with your TV turning off or on. Please give this a try.

We moved and brought our old tv with us. The difference is a new Xfinity box. I tried everything here and nothing worked. I mentioned it to my grandson and he knew right away what the problem was. He asked for the tv remote (Sony) and went to the settings. I’m sorry I’m not sure what it’s called but it allows the tv to talk to other devices. He turned it off and it hasn’t happened again. The tv still works fine with the Xfinity box.
