Why does my cable box keep randomly changing the channel to NBC throughout the day and after daily updates?

I was just watching CNN and having missed a story I rewound it to the point I needed (about 3 minutes back).  I hit play and instead of playing the CNN feed that had been on for over an hour, it automatically changed channels to NBC's feed, thus erasing my ability to see what I wanted.  This random switching to NBC (a Comcast company owned channel) happens often and also after every single daily update.  It is never any other channel other than NBC.  I am [Edited: "Language"] that I couldn't see the news item and have no idea if it will replay.  The DVR is supposed to allow for such things. But on top of that the reset to NBC after every single daily update as well as random instances is rather suspicious considering the Comcast/NBC connection.

Hello user_leko8w , That is quite an odd issue. You mentioned it does this after updating. Does your box randomly reset itself every day?

The playback rewind feature unfortunately is only for the channel you are on when watching live TV. So if the channel changes it starts fresh from when that channel got changed. The DVR only applies to recordings. So if you had recorded the CNN broadcast and went back it would let you rewind.

Regardless we will want to figure out what is happening with the box. Have you gotten any error messages that have popped up when this happens?

It’s not an “odd” issue as the comcast tech says. I’ve been dealing with this for TWO YEARS. Spent at least 10 hours on phone with CS, multiple new boxes, tech visits to house. Nothing. Just happened again this morning. No one knows and more importantly no one cares. Live with it or go to sling tv.

@user_364ae1 - That sounds incredibly frustrating. Having your TV constantly switch to a specific channel, especially after updates, points to a few possible settings or system issues with your Xfinity TV Box. Here are the common causes and troubleshooting steps for an Xfinity TV Box that keeps changing channels, particularly after updates:

Check for "Default Startup Channel" Settings

Sometimes, after an update or reset, the box defaults to a specific channel instead of the Last Channel Watched.

- How to Check/Change (X1 Box):

1. Press the Xfinity button on your remote.

2. Navigate to the Settings (gear icon) and press OK.

3. Go to Preferences.

4. Select General.

5. Look for Default Startup Channel.

6. Make sure this is set to Last Channel Watched. If it's set to a specific channel (like NBC), change it.

HDMI-CEC Control Interference

HDMI-CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) allows devices connected via HDMI (like your TV and your Xfinity box) to control each other. A setting on your TV or another connected device might be sending a command to change the channel.

- Action: Look in your Xfinity TV Box Power Preferences for a setting often called HDMI Device Control or HDMI-CEC and turn it OFF.

1. Press the Xfinity button > Settings (gear icon) > Device Settings > Power Preferences > Look for the HDMI control setting and disable it.

Address the Daily Update Restart

Since you mentioned it happens after daily updates, the box is likely restarting itself every night (usually between 2:00 AM and 5:00 AM local time). When it comes back online, it may be defaulting to NBC instead of the last channel you were on.

- Troubleshooting/Mitigation:

1. Follow the steps in Point 1 above to ensure the Default Startup Channel is set to Last Channel Watched.

2. You can try to change the window of time for this daily restart in case it's happening at an inconvenient time:

Press Xfinity button > Settings (gear icon) > Preferences > General > Daily Update Time.

System Refresh / Reboot

A full power cycle can often clear temporary glitches that cause unusual behavior, especially after updates.

- Power Cycle:

1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the Xfinity TV Box.

2. Wait for at least 60 seconds.

3. Plug the power cord back in.

4. Allow the box to fully reboot (this can take several minutes).

If none of these steps work, the issue might be related to a persistent system error or a deeper connection problem that requires our direct intervention. Please let us know how the above troubleshooting goes, and remain here for any customers facing this concern :)
