What equipment should I get for my four TVs if upgrading from Legacy to X1 for the first time? Companion boxes?

After reading comments in the forum, I'm wondering if we should be requesting certain equipment when we upgrade or if we just accept whatever is sent to us.
We started with:
Two converter boxes--both non-DVR, with the blue OnDemand menu (Motorola DCT700 and DCX3200) and

Two small adapters that did not have OnDemand OR dvr, SD, with less channels.

Motivated by the loss of a favorite channel, I contacted Xfinity through CHAT.
I noticed I was being charged the same price for the small AND large adapters, so I asked if it would be free of charge (using shipping and return by mail) to upgrade ALL the boxes, even though only TWO of them (the OnDemand ones) qualified for a free upgrade (per the frequent and urgent emails I had been getting).
I was assured that all shipping fees would be waived (still sorting that part out) and that all the new equipment would be shipped to me, then I was only sent TWO boxes.

I got a XG1-P and a XG1-A, and they are working fine for the most part, but I'm wondering--when I ask (again) for the other boxes that I was promised, should I be requesting a certain type of box? Is there supposed to be only one "hub" box along with smaller "companion" boxes?
If we could have DVR and HD on all four boxes with no new equipment charges, that would be ideal (all our TVs are on the older side, but we might upgrade all to HD someday), but I don't want to pay MORE for equipment than I'm already paying.

I found the Xfinity article below ("hub vs. companion)" but it didn't answer any questions I had.
(1) Can someone explain a bit more about what a companion box is--who/what is it for, and what does it or doesn't it do?
(2) And my first question: Can someone tell me if I'm supposed to just accept what's sent to me or if I should be requesting something specific?
THANKS for reading.

First, do you have a 4K TV?  If so, Xfinity only has two boxes that do 4K - XG1v4 is a wired DVR while Xi6 is a wireless, non-DVR that requires you to use the Xfinity router.  There are other HD DVRs if you don't have any 4K sets.

We have four TVs with X1 boxes.   Two are 4K with XG1v4 DVRs and the other two are HD with the small companion boxes (XiD-C and XiD-P, same boxes,  just different manufacturers).  We can record and watch the same recorded content on any of the TVs.

As for box fees, I don't believe Xfinity tiers based on 4K, HD, or SD.

@BIslander Thanks for the response.
No 4K over here. Two of our TVs don't even have HDMI ports.

If you have time to respond:
1. Did you choose to have "companion boxes" (if so, why) or is that what Xfinity chose for you?
2. To clarify, are you saying that the companion boxes do everything the other ones do?
Thanks.

1.  Didn't choose the companion boxes.  That's what they sent because we already had the main DVR and the little boxes work just fine paired with the the primary X1.

2.  Not quite.  The XG1v4s are fully functional DVRs.  Paired with them, you can schedule and watch recordings on the TVs connected to the companion boxes.  I don't think Xfinity will send a companion box as the first or only one in the house.
