Volume level changed?

This is weird and I don't expect anyone will come up with a definate answer but yesterday I noticed that the audio volume level that comes from my TV is much lower than it has been since I got the X1 box. I usually listen to programs thru an AV Receiver but there are times that I turn that off and listen to the audio from the TV via the HDMI port.  My "comforatble" volume level on my TV is "6", but now I have to increase it to "12" to get the same loudness. I was initially concerned that something was wrong with my hearing but that doesn't seem to be the case. The sound level thru my AV Receiver via optical seems to be unaffected.

So, I'm just looking for an explanation, but I'm afraid it's going to be one of those things that someone tweaked and no one else notices or cares.

digital ATSC and cable carriage via various Mpeg generations are all digital (volume not adjusted, video content (brightness, gamma, sharpness,contrast, chroma saturation/hue, etc). Other than transcoding to various needed streams 'just in time' no adjustment or setting is available. the volume in this case should be unchanged from as it leaves a non-broadcast provider or as it is transported by fiber from a broadcast provider to one of Comcast's headends-in-the-cloud. have you tried swapping set top box HDMII cables?

Yeah, the signal is all digital and shouldn't change.

I just tried a new HDMI cable with no difference.

I had checked the settings on the TV and could not find anythng that would put it back the way it was (and no one else had access to the equipment).

 

I did notice that the volume level is about equal when looking at a local channel thru cable vs outside antenna.  Before things changed the cable version was about twice as loud. Is it possible that Comcast equalized the volume levels to match the local channels when compared with the channels via cable?

not likely since it is all set (like color/tint) only at the time of production in the studio.

New development.

I didn't disclose that the HDMI signal went through a splitter and to another device which is generally turned OFF. I did activate that device today and noticed that the volume level increased back to what I considered normal. When that device is turned off the level does not change. If I disconnect that device  (HDMI), even though it is off and not powered, that will lower the volume until I activate that device again. So when the original problem occurred I had rearrangied some of the cables and probably disconnected things for a second.

Can I say Device = Hauppauge PVR2?

 

Interesting- wouldn't expect the audio level to be affected this way.

i have to turn my volume up to max when my fan or ac is on and sometimes that’s not even loud enough to hear ...I have called xfinity but they don’t have an answer ! This is terrible

Has anyone figured out this out yet ? Thanks

My problem was hardware related., but you might try the closed captioning. It helps when the actors mumble their lines.

I don't think you have a similar problem...

I have another device, a HDMI Splitter, connected and it depends on which order things are powered up. The audio will either be surround or 2 channel. The 2 channel is louder.

I also have sound level issues with the new box and told this is a real problem

the x1 delivers digital audio via the HDMI cable. the TV or sound receiver/bar has to put out the sound.

if you are talking about the 2 tuner legacy DVR (non-X1) they had a preamp and could adjust volume level. X1 follows the HDMI technology and like a DVD player does not modify the audio level.

if you converted from the old two tuner boxes they had an internal analog audio amplifier. The X1 set top boxes are pure digital audio/video and the audio level is a stream of numbers 0 and 1 that are unchanged from the source to the audio device or TV.
