using mute but having text dialog across bottom

On my old Xfinity box I could mute a show or news cast and read the dialog text  across the bottom. But not no more. It seems all I can do is have Closed Captioning on all the time even with sound.

Please let me know if there is a way to get the old way back. Thank you

If you are speaking of auto captions on when muting that is not possible.  The set top box doesn't 'seel your 'mute' button press (or turning sound all the way down) so it can not turn on captions. press down and 'left' to toggle captions on/off or just use voice remote "captions' to toggle.
