surround sound -- Multi Channel Stereo

We just "Upgraded" our Xfinity TV from cable to WiFi.  In our large screen room we have a Denon Surround Sound System which works well.

With the xfinity using cable we could select "Surround - Multi-Channel Stereo" as an option.  Now wfuith the WiFi connection to the master box that option is not available, and we do not get full Surround Sound from back speakers and bass box.  Seems like only the center speaker works now.  Also with the old cable connection normal listening volume was around 40, now with WiFi and surround Sound set to "Dolby Digital +" our listening volume is 55 or higher.

We use HDMI cabling from the Xi6T box to the Denon, and HDMI from the Denon to the TV.  Same cabling we used under the old xfinity box.  Also the Xi6T box is connected to the xfinity modem via a Ethernet cable.

Multi Channel Stereo is available using the Blu-Ray Denon setting.

Not certain what to do make this work now.

Appreciate you reaching out ruffnit, You would want to run the Expert audio mode to your external sources. Here is a breakdown of the specific Audio Settings for the XI boxes.
  • Auto Detect: Negotiates the best available format (such as Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound) directly with your TV or A/V receiver.
  • Expert Mode: Sends the raw audio signal directly to your surround sound receiver without the Xi6 box trying to upmix or decode it.
  • Bluetooth Devices: The Xi6 supports Bluetooth, allowing you to pair wireless headphones or speakers directly through the Audio menu

Thanks for your reply Tommy,

I set up Expert Mode on the X1 Box.  Still have the same Surround on the Denon...

[Auto]

Source: CBL/SAT

Mode:  Direct, Stereo, Dolby Digital +

I have selected Dolby Digital +.  Multi-Channel Stereo is not an available option.

I also changed the X1 box connection from ethernet cable to WiFi.  Restarted the X1 box.

No difference.

Am I missing something?

You bet ruffnit! We are here to help. Is the Ethernet still running to the box, even with the setting switched, I wanted to check if the ethernet cable was still present.

I pulled the ethernet cable off the X1 box, then reset it, it found the WiFi signal and came up OK.

Is ethernet better than WiFi connect for TV signals?

ruffnit Both of the options are solid, let's take a peek at the devices here from our backend, and we will be able to find out a bit more on the diagnostics. Could you please send our team a direct message with your full name and full address? Our team can most definitely take a further look at this issue.

@ruffnit   What Denon?  What speaker layout?

Press Info on the Denon remote. On the left you will see the codec and channel count coming from the Xi6.  The right will show the sound mode and active speakers.

When you press a sound mode button, what options to you get?

Even tho the Xi6 uses WiFi or ethernet to get program content, the HDMI output of the box is the same as the coax wired boxes.

Thanks Bislander

My Denon is older, AVR-1513.  Has 3 front speakers (L,M,R), bass speaker, rear speakers (L,R).

Video Source is set to CBL/SAT

Audio Input Mode for CBL/SAT is set to HDMI.

Decode Mode is also set to AUTO.

Pressing the Surround button on the remote shows this:

     [HDMI]

     Source: CBL/SAT

Mode:  Direct, Stereo, Dolby Digital +

Mode used to also include Multi-Channel Stereo as well as Direct, Stereo, and Dolby Digital +

Selecting Blu-Ray allows Multi-Channel Stereo as a mode selection which plays on all the speakers.

I'm not a giant on technology advances so maybe I'm missing something.  It would just be great to go back to coax input.  I don't see any new advantage between the Xi6 box and the old large coax modem.

Thanks for your help!!

@ruffnit Your post mentions Direct, Stereo, DD+.  What is that in reference to?  Direct is a mode that bypasses all digital tools, including sound modes like MultiCh Stereo.  You can get out of Direct by selecting a sound mode.  Volume on Direct also tends to be lower.

@ruffnit The 1513 is pretty old and I'm not familiar with it.  But, it appears sound mode selections do not work the same as newer models.   The manual says you use the Surround < and > buttons to switch between Direct and MultiCh Stereo.  Have you tried that?
