Starting on 01/27 captions for FOX shows are out of sync (45 seconds delayed)

First noticed on 01/27, the caption for FOX shows are 45 seconds delayed, up to 1/23 they are OK, this is similar to the problem reported back in November 2023 for ABC shows under the title "Closed Captions out of sync on ABC shows" by user_kh9bi4.

It took almost 5 months to get that resolved.

It seems that last time the only way to get this fixed was to log an Accessibility Complaint with the FCC.

Will you take care of this or we need to involve the FCC?

Hi there! Our team is happy to help you with the Closed Captions here, Dolphfrank! We want those working at the right time, all the time! Are you watching FOX using a TV box or are you streaming using the Xfinity Stream app?

I am using a smart card and watching on TV.

Today's (2/27/2025), Rescue Hi-Surf was showing captions from Extracted (the previous show in Fox), until 3 minutes into the program.

Dolphfrank Thank you for the update! I'm sure we can get this sorted out. Before we get started, are there any steps you have tried on your end in troubleshooting? I would hate to have you repeat steps you have already tried.

There is nothing I can do to troubleshoot.  I turn the tv, I change the channel to fox, I watch a show, the captions are 3 minutes delayed (I used a stopwatch).  I watch any other channel, the captions come in time with the dialog.  It is not a program, it is everything, commercials, news, the super bowl, EVERYTHING.  So I have to watch it on HULU...

I just tripped across this problem this evening while trying to watch a DVR'd copy of "DOC" from a couple of weeks ago.  Like Dolphfrank, I saw the issue on the local ABC station last year.  That specific problem seemed to only affect customers with TIVO DVR's.  Is that the same with this issue?

I used a stopwatch app to time the difference between when I heard a specific line of dialog and when it showed up as a closed caption.  The difference - on the episode of DOC I watched - was 4 minutes and 42 seconds.  This does, of course, make the closed captions absolutely useless.  I checked a couple of other recordings of DOC I have on my DVR, and saw the closed captioning was out of sync (but I didn't measure it).

I was the one who opened up a complaint with the FCC on last year's ABC issue.  I am hoping that I won't have to do the same thing to get this issue resolved.

Xfinity, the ball is in your court.  Could someone from the Xfinity technical team please respond?

Just in case this issue has not been resolved - which based on my viewing last night it hasn't - here are the symptoms that were discovered when this issue was seen on the local ABC affiliate here in Sacramento:

- Problem only occurs on TIVO DVR's that use cable cards (I suspect that Dolphfrank is using a TIVO box since he reported the ABC problem last year)

- Swapping out the cablecard in the TIVO box did not resolve the problem

- Restarting the TIVO box does not solve the problem

- Problem does not appear on Xfinity X1 boxes

- Captions are out of sync on National feeds, but not on local originated feeds like news or local programming

- If viewing content using an "off-air" DVR (even a TIVO) the captions are in sync whether local or national feeds

I hope that you can get to the bottom of this.

Yes I am using a TIVO.  I never watch the programs live, I record them and watch them later.  My wife records the news. When we watch the recorded program the captions are delayed by several minutes, I once timed at 3 minutes, but since then I have seen that they are out of sync I have stopped watching the program, and have to fallback on Hulu to watch those programs, my wife does not need the captions so she watches the news without them.  As a test I turned on the news live, and they were delayed by 5 minutes.  So the problem happens for me in:

  - two TIVOs with cable card.

  - local feed, live or off-air (recorded)

  - national feeds, live or off-air (recorded)

I do not have a Xfinity X1 box to verify if it happens or not with it.

As the problem happens with both Tivos I have not swap out the cards (and then have to go through the hassle of reassign them to their new tivo) or restarting the Tivo, as the problem ONLY HAPPENS FOR FOX.  ABC programs are perfectly fine after the last year `fix`

I have opened a case and a person from corporate asked me to call her but given my job schedule I was only able to left voice messages and now it seems the ticket is closed.

I have enclosed a sample of DOC in which no captions show for quite a while and when they show they are for the previous program of Kitchen Knightmares where the captions mention Chef and salty.

Hello, @rgm2448. I would like to take a look at your account to see what we can do to sync the close captioning and the specific line of dialog on the show you're trying to watch.

Please send a direct message by clicking the chat icon in the upper right corner of the page, click on the pen and paper icon, then enter “Xfinity Support” in the “To” section.

@XfinityRaul I already had a chat with Xfinity Support open from the same problem with the local ABC affiliate last year.  I have added comments to that chat.  Please let me know what you need.

@Dolphfrank I contacted someone at Comcast that I talked to during last year's ABC problem and alerted her to the current FOX issue.  She just emailed me that the technicians had verified the problem and switched to a different feed and the closed captioning problem seemed to be fixed.  I just checked FOX here on my TIVO DVR and I can see that the captions are in sync with the program.  I will check a few more times today and this evening to see if this fix holds.  Please check on your end and post back with the results.
