Recorded NFL games don't fast-forward smoothly, but college football does

To keep up with games in the NFL, I often record them and then fast-forward (at the lowest speed) thru them later. But instead of seeing each frame of the video, it only seems to show a frame from every half-second or so. So I might see the quarterback throwing the ball, and then the next thing I see is the receiver with the ball in his hands -- I don't see the ball actually moving thru the air. And then the next thing I see is the receiver on the ground -- I don't see him actually getting tackled.

This playback is very choppy and makes it difficult to follow the game. And this only seems to happen with NFL games. It doesn't happen with college football or any other show I might record. I don't remember having this problem last season. Anyone else experience this or have some insight?

Easy answer... Comcast has either dictated or allowed that all NFL games recorded on any station has to go to the

cloud ( check your NFL recordings for the cloud icon). This started from game 1 (see other threads). Your college

games remain being recorded to your DVR hard drive.

@tbill1 I don't see any cloud icons on any of my recordings. I hit the "Xfinity" button on the remote, then Saved\For You or Saved\Recordings. I've also been digging thru the Settings menus and I don't see any options for hard drive vs cloud storage. It's possible we have different hardware and/or firmware.

My main cable box bricked about a year and half ago. When the technician installed the new box, I asked him if I would lose my existing recordings. He said that it was all in cloud storage. And sure enough, my recordings were still there when I checked the new box. But I suppose it's possible they were stored on the local hard drive and backed up in the cloud.

Another factor to consider is that if I'm watching an NFL game and I pause it, it fast-forwards smoothly. So maybe the pause buffer is local to the device?

Whatever the explanation is, the effect is very annoying! And obviously Comcast can fix it, because it's specific to NFL games and doesn't affect other content.

@tbill1 I did some experimenting and u are correct. I see the cloud icon now -- when fast-forwarding, it pops up on the left side of the screen, just above the blue line that shows how many minutes and seconds have elapsed in the recording.

I started a recording and then unplugged the power to the main cable box. After it rebooted, I checked and the recording was intact. However, it showed a cloud icon. And sure enough, fast-forwarding was choppy. I checked another recording from last night, and that did not have a cloud icon. Fast-forward playback was smooth.

Based on this, it seems that MOST programs are recorded to the hard drive by default, but also backed up on the cloud. If there is a interruption of power or connection to the main cable box, the hard drive recording is discarded and the cloud back-up is used instead. And because the data has to be transmitted from cloud storage rather than accessed locally, there isn't sufficient bandwidth for smooth fast-forward playback.

So the question remains why Comcast would record NFL games to the cloud by default.  A programming error? Some licensing restriction from the NFL? In any event, it sucks :-(

On my setup I have DVR service and when I pause a recording, the info bar either says DVR or has a "cloud Icon" DVR. All my recordings

are DVR recordings except NFL games this year. Besides the NFL recordings, the only time I see Cloud is if the box is rebooting when I have

a recording going. Anything that interrupts the normal recording process would and should be the only time it happens.

I don't use FF to watch football (use 30 second skip). but I certainly use it for MLB games. Like you, if I put it at

the first FF speed, I can clearly see what is going on. But if the MLB game was a cloud recording, it is exactly as you described

and unwatchable (for me).  That is why I stopped ordering MLB Extra innings because Comcast doesn't have that on dedicated channels,

resulting in Cloud recordings.
