Poor picture quality

I just got an Xfinity wireless cable box with my brand new LG 4K TV and when I watch Comcast/Xfinity, the picture quality is so much worse than watching shows/sports on other apps. I have played with the resolution through Comcast and that doesn’t seem to work. Looks like a lot of people have had this issue. Anyone able to solve it? Would a new HDMI cord make a difference?

the set top box is set to give your TV the best resolution. Can you describe the problem you are seeing as you watch for example a network game show or news show?

@Rustyben It is across the board, on all channels. It looks like a bad connected streamed show or like watching TV in the 90s on SD.

When the comcast tech sold me on the box, he mentioned that internet speeds were plenty good and my router was close enough to my TV.

does your manual show the TV does UHD HDR10? or is limited to DV (dolby video)?

We just installed an Xfinity wireless cable box, also with a brand new LG 4K TV and noticed the same thing. The picture quality on the LG, including using apps, is lovely--and can be changed to many different levels of saturation, etc. When you use the wireless box there doesn't seem to be any way to adjust the quality of the picture. It's VERY bring, everything VERY saturated, lots of contrast. It's not terrible, it's watchable, but it's nothing like as good a picture as we get when we don't use the wireless cable box but just watch the tv's streaming apps. Is there any way to adjust the picture??? Or do you just get what you get? Would it be a better picture (and more adjustable) if it were a cable connection instead of a wireless one? We get a lovely picture on the tv that is attached to cable but I haven't looked to see if it's adjustable.

Set you for 4k tv’s HDMI setting to deep color and problem solved. Typically it’s off for the Xfinity box because almost all their broadcasts are in HD.

@user_623a0a any other advice? That didn’t help me sadly. The quality looks so bad, it’s so blurry can’t even watch sports on it. Even the UI looks terrible.

The problem at least for cable. is that Comcast delivers only a 720p signal for HD channel. Only 420p for SD channels.

They somehow convert 1080i channels to 720p.  You will get a better picture watching 1080i channels over the air.

Your television may have some automated systems that when turned off may improve the picture.

As my grandmother liked to say: "You can't make silk from a sow's ear.".

@MNtundraRET the issue is that it’s not like it’s just bad, it’s completely unwatchable. Sports are extremely blurry. It’s not even 1080i. It’s absolutely terrible. Can’t even make out the players on the screen. Any kind of motion is blurry.

Did you go out and purchase a high-speed 4K HDMI cable.?  I would not trust Comcast cables since they are not labelled that way. You cannot use the older HDMI cables on a 4K television.

My 2016 Samsung 4K 3D television gets an acceptable cable picture on a RNG cable-box with my current adjustments on the tv. I don't know if that would be the case using a X1 cable-box. I use DSL for Internet and can't use X1 cable-boxes.

@MNtundraRET yes I have 4k cables, I’ve swapped them out with cables I know work for a fact and it still doesn’t work. I’m getting a new box so we will see, but if this doesn’t work I’m definitely gonna think about canceling my services. This is the last straw.

Recently, Comcast notified me and told me to upgrade to the new X1 box; my old one was about 14 years old. They sent me the new box, I installed it and there was a humming coming from the box and the picture quality was definitely diminished from what came out of my old box. I went to the Xfinity store and they replaced the box. The humming has disappeared but the picture quality is still not as good as the old one was. It appears they have changed their circuitry and the newer design video-wise is not as good as the old design - a real disappointment.
