Poor image quality in dark scenes
I have a 4K Vizio display (model M-55F0) hooked up to the XG1v4 via HDMI. In content that is brightly lit, the picture is fantastic. However, in dark scenes, the picture tends to suffer from significant discoloration and artifacting.
These scense typically come up in movies. Recent instances include the sewer scenes in "IT" (On Demand from HBO) and almost all of "Alien: Covenant" (DVR'd off of FX). I have tried adjusting backlight and color calibration, which has reduced but certainly not eliminated the issue. I have tried reducing the resolution output from the cable box to 1080p, which didn't do much good.
I have not noticed this on similar content on the same display coming from my PlayStation 4 or Apple TV.
I understand this is likely the net effect video compression technology, but it renders these movies virtually unwatchable. Does anyone have any advice on how to offset these effects? Horror movie season is right around the corner, and it seems like I won't be able to enjoy it at this rate.

I use a specially tweeked video setting. I jack up the brightness and the contrast, increase the color a bit, increase the backlight. then I saved the settings, and use it for only those "dark" movies and tv shows. I had assumed it was on everything, I see it on netflix and amazon as well, from various sources, and it was a problem with my display not handling darker scenes. I have to switch back to a more standard setting for most things, as the colors seem too washed out, when watching any sports, for instance. play around with the video settings until you get to a point where it's watchable.

I would add by way of clarification here that I know I mentioned in my initial post that I tried re-calibrating the set. By that I meant I nudged the sliders around to see what effect it would have, which waas minimal. If you find yourself in this spot, I advise you hit that factory reset and start from scratch. You've likely dug yourself into a hole that you will have a hard time digging out of.

I apprecaite the reply, Jim_r1. What's the make and model on your TV?
In my case, it does appear that the issue was due to TV calibration. I hit factory reset on the Vizio out of desperation, and the picture quality came to life (on Alien: Convenant, a film that plays a lot with shadow). Then I started plugging back in the RTINGS suggested calibration settings, and the visual noise returned. Either my particular set is a bit abnormal in this regard or, more likely, the RTINGS settings are not compression friendly.
So, I went to the least visually jarring of the standard presets and figured I'd leave it there. I agree that sports now seem a bit washed out, but I'm not ready to live a life where I'm riding picture settings up and down depending on what channel I'm on.
Of note, the "clear action" setting, which inserts black frames to reduce blur, by itself seems to add a lot of noise in dimly lit scense.

it's an LG, not a super HD, just old-school hd, but has the same issues with darker scenes. the tweeked settings helps a lot, but it isn't perfect. but you can't see anything in some of the night scenes, for instance in game of thrones, on any of the standard settings.

Addendum: I believe this may have a lot to do with the number of people stuck inside binging movies/television or playing games on the weekends and Comcast throttleing back the signal. They say they don't however, anecdotally, we tried the exact same movies through Comcast last night and everything was perfect.

We've had this issue lately as well. Brand new Ultra4K television where anything Comcast provides is fine but as soon as we start to stream, Netflix/Hulu, is horribly dark and unwatchable. Since I'm a Prime member, I have switched back to my FireStick for streaming and haven't had any issues. Not sure what the deal is with Comcast.
