Is the X1 platform really this limited?

I have the following X1 equipment:

  • Arris XG1v3 DVR
  • XiD-C cable box
  • XiD-P cable box

The XG1v3 and XiD-C came with XR11 remotes while the XiD-P came with an XR15 remote. I have since picked up a used XR11 remote to use in place of the XR15.

I was surprised when my wife came to me last night complaining that the DVR knocked her off watching a movie using the XiD-P cable box. I checked the DVR and found I was only recording 4 programs at that time. Note the XG1v3 DVR has 6 tuners.

I did a little research and discovered the XiDs have no tuners of their own and must use one of the tuners on the XG1v3 DVR. I did a little calculating as follows:

Tuner 1-4: used for recording on DVR

Tuner 5: reserved for live TV on DVR

Tuner 6: reserved for live TV on XiD-C cable box

That left no tuner available for the XiD-P cable box at that time.

I went to the Xfinity store the next day to see if they had any other equipment available to solve the problem. They had a cable box that had the following disadvantages:

  • It was non-X1 so couldn't access the DVR for setting recordings or watching programs on it.
  • It would not work with a voice remote

This box was unacceptable. I suggested renting a second DVR to add additional tuners to my setup. I was told that Comcast did not allow customers to have more than one DVR. I asked that if a customer had an X1 DVR and three XiD tuners then he could only record two programs at a time. He said yes.

I went away dismayed that Comcast has been pushing the X1 platform for years but only offered a crippled system with limited capabilities.

I have a few questions:

  • Is the XG2 an X1 device?
  • Can I get two XG2s to replace the two XiDs I have?
  • Can I access the DVR with an XG2 and set and watch recording on it?
  • Does the XG2 work with a voice remote like the XR11?

One last thing. I found the XR11 remote worked well but somtimes went through a pair of batteries in a few months. It has been replaced by the XR15 remote which my wife and I hate. Is it even possible to even get XR11 remote now? I even picked up a used XR11 remote to use in place of the XR15 I have. The XR15 was then thrown in a drawer.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post.

In order
Yes
Yes, it’s possible but depends on your individual market supply
Yes
Yes
You may get one like you posted earlier, but again depends on market but most everything is repackaged now with the XR15

Hello MisterEd51. Thanks for visiting and creating a post on our Forum. I completely agree with CCAndrew, that you should get an XG2 X1 HD cable box. This will free up your tuners. Normally, I would offer to help you through an order for Self Install equipment, however in ordering X1 HD equipment, we are not able to specify which type X1 HD box you get. Inventory is picked at the warehouse at random, and you can be sent another XiD, an Xi3, or the XG2, or the equivalent. All of these fit into our "X1 HD Additional Outlet" ordering system. The only way to specify what type of box you get, would be to physically visit your local Xfinity Store and request the X1 XG2 box. That's my recommendation, so you get what you want. Please let us know if you need any other assistance, and thank you for being a valued customer.
