Is it possible to use mesh network for X1 cable 3rd party apps

I understand the cable box connects to my internet gateway in order to use third party apps like Amazon. For the den television however, it is too far from the gateway and the wifi signal is weak.  As such the apps (well, only tried Amazon so far) are very slow. I installed a mesh network to overcome the weak signal and would like to know if it's possible to have the box in that room connect to the mesh network instead of directly to the gateway? Thanks.

@derek.h Good question, and thanks for posting to the community. If you have the same network name attached to the Mesh devices, the box should pick up the closest connection point, and improve the experience. Let us know if you need more help.

@derek.h  I believe your understanding is wrong.  The apps on X1 are available even if you are not using an Xfinity gateway.  You can confirm this yourself by turning off your gateway and then using the X1 apps.

Oh, that would be unfortunate then. I hoped that a stronger wifi signal would improve the speed of the app. I should try it on the TV that's near the gateway to confirm that it's still slow, but then that is also a different cable box (the main one) so that result would potentially be inconclusive.

On the other hand, I did read some results when searching this that implied that the apps did require xfinity internet, such as one where someone was told the apps wouldn't work at all fir someone who had xfinity cable but a different company's internet. Perhaps this was for older equipment?

@derek.h Like i said, just turn off the gateway and see if you can still run the apps on your X1 boxes.

@XfinityBenny  Are you saying 3td party apps accessed through X1 boxes use the local WiFi network for streaming?   How does that work?  What happens if you don't have Xfinity Internet service?   Is this described somewhere that customers can see?

Hi there, @BIslander I hope you're having a good night. When you use Xfinity apps on your Xfinity box, like the Xfinity Stream app, they access the internet through your home Wi-Fi network to deliver content like live TV, on-demand shows and recordings which means that using these apps will count towards your monthly internet data usage; you can identify which features use internet by looking for an "Internet badge" on the app or feature menu. If you don't have an active internet connection, most apps on your Xfinity box will not work properly as they rely on an internet connection to access content and functionality; you can only watch live TV channels included in your cable package without internet access. -Richard

@XfinityRichard  Well, Xfinity Stream is not an app on X1.  Really.  It's an app on other devices that use the Internet to access your Xfinity TV content.  I believe @derek.h is asking about getting better performance when connecting to 3rd party apps like Netflix through the X1 box.  Xfinity Stream is not involved in that.

So, back to his original question - does proximity to the Xfinity gateway help in accessing apps like Amazon through the X1 box?

@derek.h  My Xfinity B7 gateway has been in bridge mode for many years and I use my own router.  I switched to a mesh system last year and get much much faster service throughout the house.  But, that didn't change the responsiveness of the 3rd party apps on X1 at all.  So, if accessing those apps involves the gateway, it doesn't appear to be thru Wi-Fi. I've never seen a way to log the X1 boxes into our home network.

@derek.h  After poking around my X1 box a bit, I see that Settings/Help has a link to WiFi where it shows the Gateway status, including Wifi Name and Password.  So, that in combination with the post saying 3rd party apps using the gateway have an Internet badge, leads me to conclude that the gateway itself probably is used to get to those apps.  But, I remain doubtful that WiFi is involved, meaning your mesh system probably won't help.

@BIslander Sorry that I haven't been responding, but I haven't had much time to check this out. I will try what @XfinityBenny mentioned with changing the name of the mesh network to match the gateway (in fact I will change both as I put a period in the gateway network name and some applications don't like that). Per your own findings I do not expect anything remarkable but I have to try. Thanks for your help and I will respond here after I try it.

Okay, sorry again for the wait. I ended up changing my mesh network name and password to match the gateway Wi-Fi and everything connects fine. Navigation on the Amazon app is still laggy, but it is also laggy on the main box which is right next to the gateway. I guess it's just the app and not the connection. That said, once in a video playback is just fine. In changing the network names, there was unfortunately a casualty- my printer no longer connects via wi-fi. It is close enough to the gateway though that I can always use ethernet. I think it is trying to connect through the mesh module rather than the gateway and I don't think the printer likes the module as I previously tried to connect to it when the Wi-Fi name was different from the gateway and it timed out even then. I even tried using WEP, and the printer did pick up that WEP was activated when I pressed the button, but ultimately gave a connection error. It is a slightly old HP Officejet Pro 8600, and looking that up it appears that connection issues with it are common. Thanks to all for the assistance.

@derek.h, Thank you for following up and keeping us in the loop. If you switch to band steering (sharing the same name/password,) you can see at times some devices lose connection. In this case, the device typically prefers to have a dedicated 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz connection. I'm glad you can still keep it hardwired

@derek.h My mesh home network name matches what X1 says it gets from the gateway.

@derek.h In another thread, we got the explanation that X1 boxes have their own cable modems for internet connectivity.  They handle streaming of apps like Netflix and do not involve WiFi.  In fact, you can still stream those apps even if your gateway is down.  You just need an active Xfinity internet service subscription.

Thanks- I just read through it. So the gateway requirement is really just an internet subscription requirement (as the built-in apps go) so they can subtract the data usage from your internet plan. As I mentioned, when the streaming starts there seems to be no lag, but when navigating the apps there is. I have a theory (probably incorrect) for why that is. I think input from the remote has to go through the cable box's operating system first which then gets passed to the app. I wonder if some apps use more CPU cycles meaning less for the main OS to process the input it passes to the app?
