How to tell if my signal is hi-def?

The audio of basic cable through my home theatre is really lacking. Is there anyway that I can tell if the signal is dolby or something else?  Are there commands in the remote that shows me this information?

Thanks!

Is the box connected to your home theater via HDMI, and then from that to your TV? If so, it will usually be the best format. Most home theaters should have some way to display the input format, either on a panel display or on-screen.

Depending on the X1 box, there is an audio setting for Expert HDMI that will pass on DD+ instead of converting it to standard Dolby. Most streaming services use DD+ for 5.1.

Most cable channels will be either Dolby 2.0 or 5.1. I have found that IP channels use DD+ if you have expert HDMI mode on. Cloud DVR recordings are usually degraded to 2.0, even if the original source is 5.1.

is your set top box connected directly to your TV's HDMI 1 or HDMI 2? is the ARC output of the TV connected to your sound system's ARC input?
