How to connect X1 box in the basement to an upstairs smart TV

My Comcast line (digital and TV) comes into the house in the basement. I have used the internet gateway for years because I have my home wifi connected. I have had the device for years and have never even hooked the X1 box up - I do not watch TV - but that has to change now because of a change in my personal  situation

I need to hook the TV box up to the smart TV  I have; I have looked at the Xfinity Support links and cannot find anything to explain how to connect the the incoming line downstairs to theTV box downstairs and to television that is upstairs so my "guest" can watch HBO. The data line coming into the house downstairs cannot be relocated and I have a CAT 5 cable running from the Xfinity gateway to my wifi router upstairs.

Who can help?

You mean you have been paying for TV service for some time but not using it?

The simple solution would be to add an Xi5 or Xi6 wifi box - or you have to have a coax line run upstairs.     You will also need to use one of the compatible gateway devices and its wifi instead of bridging to your own wifi router.

According to this, you will also have to hook up your existing wired box, since the wireless ones are supposed to be secondaries, but that just needs a splitter on the wire connected to your gateway.

First, because that box has been sitting without use so long, it will either need to be reactivated or totally swapped out.
Second, it sounds like you want 2 tv’s hooked up to the same box? Both tv’s will show the same channel at the same time and because of distance one won’t have direct control of it.
It may be easier for your second tv to use a Roku with Xfinity stream app instead of the cable box(access to the same channels).

@CCAndrew No, there is only one TV...upstairs. I have exchanged the *very* old box for a new one. The Xfinity rep in the store told me I should just download the "Xfinity Stream" app on the smart TV; there is no such thing, so I have the same problem. It is downstairs, the television is upstairs.

Perhaps there is no fix.

You have some choices even if the obvious one of having coax installed to the location you want is out.

You can add a wireless box - which might add $5/month to your bill - or perhaps more if you are on an old contract.   Or you can get a roku and install the xfinity stream app.  Or use a PC and the stream web site with HDMI out to the TV.    The wireless X1 box will have the advantage of a remote with a number pad for selecting channels - the app versions are a little awkward about that, but managable if you pick a small number of favorites and use that guide view.

You need to get coax to the room with the tv and use a splitter to split the line to the modem and cable box. Your tv may not be compatible with the Stream app, that’s why I suggested a Roku and download the Xfinity Stream app if you’re unable to get cable to the tv room
