How to activate ir mode for new remote

My Wife has bad vision, so I got a new simple remote for her.  But it requires ir mode to change cable channels.  I am told there is an ir mode that needs activating.  The menus I am told to search do not have that option anywhere.  My xfinity remote is too complex for her including the voice command feature.

 

How do I switch to ir mode?  This mode is used by most third party universal remotes.

IR is always on and available. it is line of sight.
