HBOmax just popped up
Finally, the hbomax app has popped up on my x1 box. Scroll down to new on x1 and it gives you an entry code that you use to sign in on the website and viola, HBOmax

Be careful. There are two boxes for HBO Max. One is a smaller box that says HBO/HBO Max. That is not the real app but just some sort of OnDemand pseudo-app. The real app is at the end of the row with Netflix, Prime, etc...
