Experiencing very choppy (unusable) audio when using Xfinity Xi6 with Samsung TV / optical port

Here is my setup:

Cable in:

Xfinity Xi6 wireless cable box connected to Samsung One Connect box via HDMI.

Audio out:

Samsung One Connect box connected to PS Audio Sprout 100 via optical cable.

Problem:

The optical out of the Samsung TV sounds awesome, and works flawlessly, with all apps except...

When I switch to the HDMI input to watch cable TV, something happens to the quality of the audio coming out of the optical audio port on the One Connect box.

It immediately becomes very clicky/choppy with audio interruptions at least once a second. It ruins the viewing experience - I can't even hear certain words.

I have both the Xfinity Xi6 and Samsung TV set to stereo PCM audio. I don't know what else to try. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Something about the audio settings is messed up when viewing cable TV on the above setup.

several years of different models of that. It appears from looking at the documentation that the Samsung one is a switching connector not a receiver nor a sound bar. are you using a receiver/soundbar that has an HDMI in and HDMI out? coax digital audio coax and Toslink are both deprecated technology and newer versions of audio are not usable.
