dvr disappearing recordings
My recordings keep disappearing too. My DVR says it is only 33% full. When I count the total hours of saved recordings, it is about 75 hours and my DVR is supposed to have a capacity of 150 hours. It has finally dawned on me that the choice provided by Xfinity of "Until space is needed" is, counterintuitively, a shorter time period than the other choice of "For 1 year." As others have pointed out, we sometimes keep older recordings because we want to view them again. Even if they are available on a streaming platform, I would rather play my recording so that I can fast-forward through the commercials. And you never know when a streaming platform will stop carrying the movie or show you want to see. I guess it's all a crapshoot and we might as well think of our outrageous cable bills as a gambling debt.

Hi, @kayar_d561. I know this can be frustrating when your recordings disappear. I have had this happen to me as well recently. It deletes my older recordings when I need the space if I am not actively watching the total storage amount and deleting things myself first. It's definitely frustrating when that happens. You can upgrade your total DVR storage. Otherwise, I would adjust the settings on specific program, such as save for 1 year if you only plan to have it for that long. I know neither option may be ideal, but this shouldn't happen if you keep your storage low on that device. I know for myself, I was running at 99%-100% for a few days before it deleted those old recordings.

Christina, thank you for your response, but what part of "my DVR is only 33% full" did you not understand? If it is only 33% full, how can I possibly know when it needs more space?

I apologize for any confusion here. While it may show 33% full now, that could be related to it deleting your previous recordings. Recordings can add up quickly, and the DVR will automatically delete some and bring your total storage down where if you didn't notice it getting high before this can happen. Whereas that's what happened to me, if I don't watch it carefully, it can add up in a day or two, then when I go back to check it it's back down to lower than 50% and my recordings are gone. Can you verify that you checked the DVR storage (not after the recordings were gone) but right before then? I notice these updates go through usually at late at night/early morning. Say checking it the night before you noticed they were gone rather than the 33% after the fact.

OK, Christy, this is almost funny. I have looked at this web page on both a Chromebook and my phone, and I do not see a Direct Messaging icon at the top of the page. There is Home, Welcome, Getting Started, a "search conversations" icon, a notifications icon, and a My Account icon. That's it.
If I go to the Support page, there is a Search icon, Find a Store, Cart, and Account. No Direct Messaging icon.

To recap the conversation above, I started out by complaining that recordings were disappearing from my DVR. After some discussion via Direct Messages with Xfinity reps about what could be causing the problem, I agreed to have a new cable box shipped to me. I specified that I only wanted the new box shipped to me IF “I can get the replacement box with no increase in the monthly charge and NO decrease in DVR capacity (150 hours)” (Direct Message of Nov. 14). I received the new cable box (actually a Starter Kit containing a new box, a new remote control, and some cables). I connected the new equipment successfully. I returned my old cable box and remote control to my local Xfinity store several days later. My recent Xfinity bill now shows an increase of $23.10 just for swapping my old cable box for a new one. $12.38 of this is a “partial charge” which reflects $20.88 “services added” minus $8.50 “services removed”. I get that this has to do with the fact that I actually had two cable boxes in my possession during the 4-day period between when I received the new equipment and when I returned the old cable box and remote control to the Xfinity store. There is also a charge on the recent bill called Add One for $10.00. This is for “Premium DVR Service Upgrade.” It looks to me like Xfinity is intending to charge me this extra $10 every month. I do not know how much more clear I could have been in specifying that my existing agreement with Comcast ALREADY had a DVR capacity of 150 hours, and that I did not need any more than that. I just wanted a DVR that would not randomly delete my recordings, which were not taking up anything NEAR the DVR’s capacity. Can someone at Xfinity please help me to get the $10 additional charge for "Premium DVR Service Upgrade” removed from this and future bills? I tried to make this request in Direct Messaging but I was advised by the Xfinity rep to post it to the public forum.

Update--An Xfinity rep did help me get the extra $10 DVR charge removed from my bill.
In making the switch to the new cable box, my DVR lost a few more recordings. But with the new box in place, no more recordings have disappeared.
In hindsight, I think I do see a sort of pattern to the disappearance of recordings from my old DVR. It did not have anything to do with space being needed by the DVR, as far as I can tell. There was some tendency for the older recordings to be the ones that disappeared, but that didn’t explain everything.
Once the new box was set up, I used voice commands with my Xfinity remote to search for some of the programs and movies that had disappeared from my old DVR, in hopes of finding upcoming air dates so I could record them again. I discovered that most of them had moved on to subscription platforms (e.g. PBS Documentaries, movies that have gone to Disney+, etc.) and others are now available only to rent or purchase, or are not currently available at all. I’m not saying that “somebody” didn’t want viewers to have a “free” recording of these shows, but you can draw your own conclusions.
