adjusting volumne

when adjusting volumne or powering off I have to be within 2-3' of TV. Installing new batteries didn't help. This is new setup, 2+ months old

you seem to be reporting that the TV is not seeing the remote's signal. the TV is handled via IR (infrared) LED emission and is line-of-sight control. you will need to aim the remote carefully toward the 'eye' (IR receiver) on the TV when power of the TV or volume of the TV is being controlled. check your TV's owner's manual to determine where that little window is located and be sure it is not blocked or obscured nor covered with the TV's factory plastic protective cover that should be peeled off so the LED can see the full signal.
