4K Box Voltage Causing HDMI Handshake Issues with my Surround Sound Processor

Hello, I'm hoping someone can help with this issue I've had three times now. I have a very elaborate home theater system using all HDMI connections with my Marantz processor. The Samsung QLED TV is connected to the Marantz HDMI out and then I have an HDMI cable running from the Marantz HDMI cable input to the comcast 4K box for TV. When I turn on the home theater system to "watch TV", I get an error message on the TV screen that the HDMI connection cannot be found or does not exist and to check the device. In addition, you can see the little wheel spinning on the TV screen that shows its looking for the HDMI connection but cannot find it.  I did the normal trouble shooting like reseating the HDMI cables, powering down, replacing the comcast box twice in 3 years, etc. but it still doesn't work. Without getting into all the gory details - after a ton of trouble shooting with Marantz specialists and a home theater installer, it was concluded that the comcast 4K may be putting out extreme voltage that is frying the Marantz HDMI input and causing this issue. They said that anything over 5 volts is too much for the Marantz processor to handle and will, slowly degrade the HDMI connection over time to a point where it just won't work anymore.. When I switch to a different input, it starts to work again, but then slowly degrades which is why everyone I've spoken to says its the Comcast box creating the issue.

With that said, when this first happened about 3 years ago, I was instructed by Marantz to buy an HD surge protector which plugs into the existing HDMI to help filter the voltage and not create the issue. Well, I've had the unit fixed three times and even bought a different model processor and the issue still keeps happening and I don't know what to do.

The technician at Marantz suggested that I post this issue on the Xfinity forum to see if anyone else may be having an issue like this because we are out of ideas. Something may be going on with the 4K box, but like I mentioned, I have replaced it twice over the past few years.

Any help or input to this would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure what to do next.

Thanks in advance! FRANK

Try running composite or component cables and an optical cable from X1 box to receiver.
Hope this works.

X1 doesn't do component video any more.  And the same with most fairly recent AVRs.  That post is 4 months old.

Every time I turn on my tv , there is no sound through the receiver. I have to turn off the power to units (tv, receiver , x1 cable box) and  turn on again. Then the sound run through the receiver again. At time I have to switch the hdmi port into the receiver.

Hello, thanks for taking the time to reach out to us regarding your audio issues. Is this only happening on 1 tv or multiple tv's? You can also try balancing the box and tv volume.

  • Select Setup.
  • Select Audio Setup.
  • For the Set volume to optimal stereo option, select Yes to automatically adjust the volume to the optimal level for stereo output.
  • If the volume is controlled through the TV Adapter or TV Box, do not adjust the TV volume setting moving forward.
  • If the volume is controlled through the TV, do not adjust the TV Adapter or TV Box volume setting moving forward.
  • Always verify that the box and TV volume are properly balanced (especially when recording).
  •

I no longer work for Comcast.
