MMS sending and receiving issues

I switched from Verizon Wireless to Xfinity Mobile on 11/9/19. I brought my unlocked Samsung Galaxy S10 over to Xfinity. Since the moment I switched I have had issues with sending and receiving MMS and group text messages. The issue is when I have WiFi and Mobile data turned on. If I turn off WiFi the MMS will transmit. I did not have this issue when on Verizon Wireless. I talked to a Xfinity tech via chat and they said I should be able to have WiFi and Mobile data turned on at the same time and be able to send and receive MMS. He suggested I reset the network settings. I did this and I'm still having the same issue. I searched the forms and this appears to be an issue for others once they switched to Xfinity. Is there anything that can be done to resolve this issue?

SMS and MMS do NOT use WiFi per se. 

 

HOWEVER,  if you are using WiFi Calling either because you are on airplane mode or because your cell signal is weak, then voice, SMS, and MMS are being routed over your WiFi/Internet to your cellular carrier's servers instead of through a cell tower. 

I will add the above to my earlier post.

Just go with another carrier and cut your losses. I believe it's anyone on older Android OS - anyone that can't update to v.10. Comcast doesn't seem to care that it's an issue.

realize this is an old thread but still a CURRENT problem - one that Xfinity does not know how to fix.

 

My galaxy A50 (android 10) works fine MMS goes out/in over wifi with data off or on. Never had a problem. My sons Moto G7 power (android 9) MUST have wifi off AND data on for MMS to work with the default app. I tried Verixon messages on the g7 (was message+ ? ) and that helped - mms went out with wifi on but only if data was on - which is OK - I can have hime toggle data on and off, just dont want him turning wifi off and forgetting to turn back on! Tried the golbal to LTE/CDMA thing but that didnt help. Now msg+ also wont send mms at all. wifi or data on/off, off,on or on/on.

This s#cks!

My experience is this with s9. You have to be on your home network for mms to work at all. Since your phone may switch to the common Xfinity network...you need to check that. This is why sometimes it works and some times does not. But in airplane mode and on home WiFi...even though i can send mms messages...it is still counted as mobile data. Unacceptable.

My partner and I both have Samsung Galaxy S7 phones on the Sprint network and have been dealing with this issue with our home Comcast/Xfinity Wifi since early February 2020. Our phones consistently sent MMS (group texts or photos, etc.) over wifi with no problem anywhere but at home or work, where Xfinity wifi is in place. At home and at work on Xfinity wifi, our MMS would either consistently fail or send after an extensive delay (usually the former). At a loss as to the source of the issue, I have been in touch with Xfinity, Sprint, and Samsung multiple times over the last few months, none of which can provide any support or resolution other than to point fingers and to tell me that we shouldn't be able to send MMS over wifi in the first place, only over our mobile network (e.g. LTE, 4G, etc.), which is obviously not accurate as we did not have this issue until the recent Android update this winter. I discovered this thread last week as part of my research in response to this ongoing frustration, which has only increased due to our remote work situation. We purchased our own separate router and modem and installed them this evening, replacing Xfinity's combined modem/router situation. It's like magic; our MMS send instantly now with no issues. Xfinity needs to step up and get this issue with its hardware resolved.

I have AT&T for mobile/cellular service and a Samsung Note 9. At home, have Xfinity Comcast for internet provider, however rather than use their horrible all in one route/modem thing, I use an Aris modem (a 3.1), and my own Asus RTxxx router.

Unfortunately, I can confirm that MMS messages will *not* send while connected to home wifi network (cellular data ON or OFF... either).

Using Textra app for messages, ND have it set to temporarily turn off wifi to send MMS.... Still does not work.

On other wifi networks (not xfinity), sending MMS works fine - with *or* without the wifi-toggle setting on the Textra app.

So it's absolutely an Xfinity service issue... Not necessarily equipment-related either (since I don't use any Xfinity internet hardware, and don't use an all-in-one router modem).

I have been having this problem since the end of last year! Have called several times and been told this was going to be fixed several times and as of today I still can't receive a dang picture in my text messages! I've been told it was Samsung fault, it was an xfinity update coming that would fix it and many other excuses. I just received my brand new galaxy s10 that I bought thru u guys thinking that would change things. Nope. I'm so upset right now, when I started this service a few years back it was awesome, everything is changing now. Please fix this issue for me, I want to receive and send pics thru texts like I pay for and should be able to do WITHOUT SWITCHING TO MOBILE DATA because that don't even work sometimes!!!!

MMS uses mobile carrier data servers and XM charges for the data used. SMS is free.

Enable RCS advanced messaging to send text with pictures to other RCS users for free on WiFi.

I read so much conflicting news...do we get charged (using chargeable mobile data) for MMS? Ater the newest security patch (june 1 2020) I cannot send/receive MMS without turning on wifi or mobile data.  Since the pie update, I've had to use Verizon messages + to do so., and have been able to send MMS with mobile data off, with or without wifi without using data. @ComcastChrisL @ComcastJK

  • Text messages and chat to registered Verizon Messages numbers use its advanced messaging features and work over WiFi or cellular data
  • Text messages (SMS and MMS) to other phone numbers only use the cellular network or WiFi Calling. 

    Unfortunately Verizon Messages does not support the RCS profile for Android phones.

UPDATE --
- PLEASE DISREGARD WHAT I POSTED BELOW
- Other than as a starting point for diagnosing. I think it's IPV6 related but not necessarily an issue with Comcast's DNS.

'Solution' for AT&T Phones
This has been driving me nuts for over a year. Finally went full in to diagnose.

I believe when an Android AT&T phone sends MMS messages to another AT&T Android device, it uses their "Advanced Messaging" platform to support large photos and videos. As far as I can tell, it doesn't use this with other carriers nor with iPhone because Apple. When a friend was over that just switched to Comcast and had an AT&T phone and was having the same issue I finally realized Comcast might be the issue.
First I set the DNS servers on my router to use Google's. Didn't help. Then remembered IPv6 was a thing. Also changed the IPv6 dns servers to point at Google's and voila. Working.
Next ran a sniffer on my phone and found vvm.mobile.att.net to be a likely candidate of what has been failing. I did a nslookup against first Google's servers and got a result. Next hit the primary Comcast dns server for Chicago and no result.

Summary: for AT&T Phones, Comcast does not have the entries for the server AT&T Advanced Messaging uses in their directory servers that Google's servers do have.
Work-around: change your home router configuration to use someone else's DNS servers for BOTH IPv4 and IPv6. This only resolves it at your home wifi.
Permanent Solution Needed: Comcast needs to get those entries into their DNS servers.

Wow, that’s some pretty cool analysis! Though, I think that MMS between AT&T users has two things going for it that XM does not provide. First, it allows for larger MMS, and second it compresses the pictures so that it and maybe some other carriers will accept them.

This is the same problem I'm having it appears once a third phone was added to the router it almost seems it treats one as a primary phone and the other ones are secondary.. but often I have to disconnect the Wi-Fi to the router to get my message to send and it relies solely on my service so I'm not even sure their Wi-Fi is doing anything but searching through your phone

My wifi was already enabled although I don't have the s20plus wifi enable quick touch icon, the setting is still in network settings. The thing that fixed it for me was the "reset of network" settings (make sure you remember your home network password lol because you will be setting it all back up in your phone) This is found in general management under reset settings. Worked like a charm finally! Hope this helps someone else.
