On Demand recording hours of unprogrammed material

I record a lot of material provided by Comcast/Xfinity using the “On Demand” programming. This is so that, as I’m sure many of you do, I can FF through the infernal ads.  Lately, I have had two situations during which a one hour TV show resulted in 6 or 7 hours (never an exact amount) of recorded material.  The show I requested was the first hour, and the excess material had nothing to do with the On Demand selection.  Just as if the recording (set to start and stop on time) could not stop itself.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Or, does Xfinity have a solution for this?

You cannot record OnDemand. You are talking about standard DVR recording.

Well, it does record to a DVR, but I believe that is the name of the option.  I understand the concept despite my obvious lac of appropriate terminology.  Do you have any idea why something that is programmed and has worked properly for years is now malfunctioning on a periodic basis?
