Why Am I Paying $10/Month for Apple Watch Cellular Service If It Requires My iPhone?

Title: Why Am I Paying $10/Month for Apple Watch Cellular Service If It Requires My iPhone?

I recently purchased a cellular-capable Apple Watch and activated Xfinity Mobile’s $10/month paired smartwatch plan.

My understanding was that this plan would allow my Apple Watch to connect directly to Xfinity’s cellular network when my iPhone was not nearby, while continuing to use my existing phone number.

However, my watch does not appear to connect independently to the cellular network.

Today, I contacted Xfinity Mobile customer support and was repeatedly told that the $10 paired smartwatch plan requires my iPhone to be nearby for the watch to function. The representative insisted that I would need to switch to the $10 standalone plan, which assigns a separate phone number, to use the watch without my iPhone.

I requested a supervisor, but the explanation remained the same.

This raises several important questions:

  1. Does Xfinity Mobile’s paired Apple Watch plan support cellular calls, texts, and data when the iPhone is turned off or out of Bluetooth range?
  2. If so, why are Xfinity representatives telling customers that a standalone plan and separate phone number are required?
  3. Could my watch’s eSIM or cellular provisioning be incorrectly configured?
  4. If the paired plan requires the iPhone to remain nearby, what additional functionality does the $10 monthly charge provide beyond the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi capabilities already included with the Apple Watch?

Apple’s cellular Apple Watches are designed to connect to cellular networks without an iPhone nearby when service is properly activated.

I have also found reports from other Xfinity customers describing similar problems.

I am requesting a clear, authoritative explanation from Xfinity Mobile’s technical support team, preferably someone familiar with Apple Watch cellular provisioning and the differences between paired and standalone plans.

I would like to keep my Apple Watch paired with my iPhone, retain my existing phone number, and use the cellular functionality I am paying for.

I would appreciate a technical explanation rather than another recommendation to purchase standalone service.

Thank you.
