no stutter dial tone when voicemail received

My Arris 1682 modem is rented from comcast and maybe it is to blame. At one time I did get a stutter dial tone and a voicemail indicator light turned on when a voicemail message arrived. I noticed recently that this does not happen anymore, though the system does record and play back voicemails. I spent an hour on the phone today with tech support and they are baffled. They are sending a tech to my house in a few days but I wonder if there is a fix that doesn't require a tech visit.
