Very frustrating to figure out but here’s how to do it! Posted a short video here:

Good god, if they would have just given us these instructions from the start it would have saved us hours of "fun". I had to replace batteries for the third time and still had to fight this thing and almost break it.

Thanks for the video post!

Hello, @user_js0fym to insert the batteries:

  1. Push the battery cover down and slide it off the remote.
  2. Insert the two included AAA batteries, making sure to match the (+) and (-) ends of the batteries with the (+) and (-) ends indicated in the battery compartment.
  3. Slide the battery cover back onto the remote.

Diagram of the back panel of the remote. The panel is removed, revealing the battery well. Two batteries go in the well.

thanks for the response. however, that method doesn't work. other's have had the same problem with this newer type of remote. like i stated, the back one solid piece and doesn't separate like all other remotes i have. so it doesn't work the same way. i found the solution a few months back where you had to push a button or spot on the front to release it but i forgot what it was.

Anyone else out there have the same problem?

user_js0fym Can you let us know what type of remote you have? You should see the model on the back or check them out here: https://www.xfinity.com/support/remotes

there is no model number on the remote. the back is smooth with only a tiny arrow at one end that i'm suppose to push. also, none of the images in the link display my remote. most everything i've seen (user manual, etc.) looks generic.

@user_js0fym The back on the Xumo remote does come off, it's a little tough though. My daughter just got a Xumo for her apartment and I was over helping her get it set up and had the same thought, that the back doesn't come off. You just need to press fairly hard to pop the back off.

thanks, i'll have a go at it. was afraid to push too hard and break it.

A note to Xfinity: This issue really needs to get fixed or you're going to have a lot angry/frustrated users coming at you when it comes time to change the batteries. Either get Xumo to change the remote or at least provide updated instructions.

Thanksl

Once you get in between the seams, say with your finger nail (or something), then hold the front and slide the back down..  There's actually a down arrow on the back of the remote.  Hope this helps

I ended up taking a pair of channel lock pliers, wrapping a cloth around the jaws and being very careful on how hard I squeezed.

I put them a little below that little arrow on the back and heard a little click then slide the back down.

I have arthritis in both hands and it’s impossible to use my thumbs. My Grandson tried doing it and he couldn’t make it budge.

Xfinity needs to get this taken of or they will be sending techs out just to change batteries.

Hello, @user_jz1075

My apologies for this inconvenience knowing you have arthritis in your hands. I know some customers aren't happy with how tight the battery compartment is on the Xumo remotes. Everyone's feedback is definitely being taken into consideration and I have posted the link here to share as well. In the meantime do you have someone who can assist? You may be able to remove it with a towel or small rag you can use to increase your grip on the back of the remote. It takes a good amount of pressure to remove.

Getting the remote control cover off to replace the batteries is extremely difficult. I finally got it off but…holy smokes!

Xfinity needs to change the remote battery access. This is ridiculous. I’m scared I’m going to break the remote and then Xfinity is going to want to charge people to replace the remote. This [Edited: "Language"]! I still can’t get it off

@tenoliav After many tries, my Grandson and I ended up wrapping the remote in a rag using a pair of channel lock pliers and squeezing down just below the little arrow. Even then it wasn't easy. I have arthritis in both hands and won't be doing that again. I like the remote layout and backlight but unless Xfinity gets this problem addressed the Xumo boxes will be going back.

The remote design needs to change, period!  I had such a difficult time changing the batteries on this remote.  As one consumer stated, they have arthritis and had a difficult time changing the batteries.  I, too, have arthritis, and changing the batteries was nearly impossible.  I removed the front cover by using a very sharp knife and wedging it in between the seams.  Then I was able to remove the back cover and change the batteries.  Who on earth designed this case?  Did they really think consumers were going to have an easy time removing it??  Please change the design of the remote.
