Moving mail back from Outlook local to Xfinity/Yahoo Webmail

A family member has been running Outlook locally and I believe they are using POP3 with the option to remove email from the servers. I have been telling them to leave the mail on the mail servers so the email is backed up. Is there a way to move year's of mail/contacts back onto the mail servers so they can stop using the Outlook client/local pst or at least have it synced? Since they are using the Outlook client and never log onto the web mail I don't think they've moved to Yahoo yet.

Use IMAP and the messages will be stored on the server

Hi there! That's a great question.

If the email account was configured using POP3 with the option to remove messages from the server, then the emails currently stored in the Outlook PST file generally cannot be automatically synced back to the Xfinity/Yahoo mailbox. POP3 was designed to download mail from the server to a local device rather than keep everything synchronized.

For contacts, Outlook contacts can typically be exported and then imported into another service, but they also would not automatically sync back to the Xfinity/Yahoo address book.

A few questions:

  • Approximately how many years of email are stored in Outlook?
  • Is the account still configured in Outlook today?
  • Are new messages currently appearing in both Outlook and Xfinity/Yahoo Webmail, or only in Outlook?

One possible option would be to reconfigure the account using IMAP instead of POP3. IMAP keeps mail synchronized between Outlook and the webmail server going forward. Depending on the volume of email involved, there may also be methods to move mail from local Outlook folders back into server-based folders, though the process can take some time and may be limited by mailbox storage constraints.

Knowing how the account is currently configured will help determine what options are available.
