Mailbox Update Needed Old Version Shutting Down

I received an email at 4:30 AM today, and it claimed to be an official Comcast Email, but when scanning the "From" field, it listed a personal comcast.net email address, with the name disguised as "Dear Comcast Owner". I can't give out the actual email address for fear this post might be flagged as spam. Fortunately I didn't click on any links, as I'm not sure if this might give my machine a virus. Is this just another phishing email? Or is it legitimately from Xfinity Support? Though there is text wtin the email body, but my screenreader can't read pictures, the email didn't have a graphic with the words "Xfinity Logo" in the text body. Is this a legitimate email? Or is it just another phishing email?

Correct. See https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/yahoo-email-migration-safety.

Check email that claims to be from Comcast/Xfinity with their Connect webmail (https://connect.xfinity.com/) and look for the XFINITY Verified Email logo. See https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/comcast-verified-email for examples of valid logo placement. A logo in the body of the email does not count.

Unfortunately, AFAIK the logo is not present when you view one of their messages in an email app or program. It's only visible when you use their web email site, and only for email sent to a Comcast.net address.

To report a scam email follow the instructions under the "How do I report phishing email sent to or from a Comcast.net email account?" heading on https://spa.xfinity.com/help/email-abuse?faq=spam-email.

@BruceW​ I've just recently signed in to my Comcast account with Xfinity Connect two days ago, and I can still access my email. Does this mean the transition already happened for me?

No. If your mail is still accessible using Connect, it has not yet been converted. Once it is, you'll have to log in to Yahoo.

Users with Comcast.net email addresses who migrate to Yahoo will still have the very same Comcast.net email address. They'll need to login to Yahoo (or access Yahoo's POP, IMAP, or SMTP servers) to send and receive messages, but the Comcast.net addresses will continue to function. Of course, users who fail to migrate will, at some undetermined future date, will lose their Comcast.net addresses.

Sometimes the migration process requires you to select a new password for email, and sometimes not.

@BruceW I recently learned that we apparently will NOT lose our @comcast.net email address.  Based on the information we had that was apparently true, but as I said, I recently learned that the statement that had said we would lose our email addresses has been removed.  However, now we can't find any documentation that stated we would lose it.  So, you're in the same boat I am - stating what we knew that is now false information.  I don't know about you, but it makes me queasy thinking all this time I gave out that information and now there is no evidence of it.  And, the verified logo has also changed, from the XF on a red background to just an X on a blue background.

They haven't said. But you don't need an email. Instead, log in to https://xfinityconnect.email.comcast.net/emailMigration. If the account you logged in with is ready to be migrated, that page will say:

You're invited to upgrade your email account to Yahoo Mail ... 

If the ID has already been migrated, the page will say:

Your Comcast.net email account is accessible at Yahoo Mail ...

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this was a phishing email, and the link you clicked was likely a fraudulent site designed to steal your login credentials. While it is true that we are currently migrating @comcast.net email accounts to a new platform (powered by Yahoo Mail) throughout 2026, the specific email you described is a known scam that has been targeting users this month.

 

Why this email is a scam
- The Sender Address: Official Xfinity emails regarding this migration will never come from a personal @comcast.net address. They come exclusively from xfinity@updates.xfinity.com.

- The Salutation: Real Xfinity communications will address you by your actual name, not generic terms like "Dear Comcast Owner" or "Dear Mail User."

- The Missing Logo: As your screenreader correctly identified, official emails have specific security markings. In the official Xfinity webmail portal, a legitimate email will show a Verified Xfinity Logo (a purple "X" or the word "Xfinity") next to the subject line in your inbox, not just as a picture inside the message body.

 

Urgent: Immediate Steps to Take
Since you entered your credentials into that link, you should treat your account as compromised. Please do the following immediately:

- Change Your Password: Go directly to xfinity.com (do not use the link from the email) and change your Xfinity ID password immediately.

- Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): If you haven't already, turn on two-step verification in your Xfinity account settings. This prevents hackers from logging in even if they have your password.

- Check Other Accounts: If you use that same password for other websites (like your bank or social media), change those passwords as well.

- Report the Phishing: You can report this to our security team by forwarding the email to abuse@comcast.net.

 

The Real Migration

There will be a banner on the main email web portal page that will mention you are eligible for the migration. It is very large and there will be a button to click on the front page to start the migration.

We can, actually (see below). But any reasonable person reading the "Important update: Changes are coming" email they sent out could come to that conclusion. Not "MAY be moving", but "WILL be moving". No hint that "not moving" is a possibility.

Again, not "MAY be", but "WILL be".

Although it doesn't actually say "move or else", it certainly IMHO is strongly hinting "move to Yahoo, or lose your email. 

... If you don’t want to keep your email address and move your email account to Yahoo Mail, you can export your data and close your email account. ...

That paragraph repeats the same threat as the previous quote. 

So, according to that email, my choices are: 1) Move to Yahoo, or 2) export the data and close the account. Nowhere is "or do nothing and continue as before" even HINTED AT! 

And the cherry on top, courtesy of The Wayback Machine (https://web.archive.org/ ), beginning in July and continuing until late September, the choices presented at https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/yahoo-email-migration-overview were:

What to expect

You'll be notified 30 days in advance to move your comcast.net email account(s) to Yahoo Mail. When the time comes, you will have three options:

  • Move your email to Yahoo Mail by accepting Yahoo’s Terms of Service and Privacy Policy to keep your comcast.net email address.
  • Export your email data using the Xfinity Email Export Portal.
  • Close your account using the Xfinity Email Export Portal, which will result in email account closure and data deletion.

And yet again, "or do nothing and continue as before" is not an option. 

And, into DECEMBER, that page said:

Do I have to upgrade my comcast.net email account to Yahoo Mail?
No ... However, if you do not upgrade, eventually you will lose access to your comcast.net email account

So I feel bad for distributing incorrect information, but not the least bit bad for believing that the information was correct. For over three months, support articles and employee statements said that was the deal. You shouldn't feel bad either. Senior management should feel awful, but that will never happen. 

I mostly feel bad that Comcast/Xfinity is such a poorly run company that can't ever seem to get it's story straight, but nothing new there . . .
