To confirm, are you speaking about you home phone service, mobile phone service, or your email?
Have you synced your email to any other social media networks like Facebook or Twitter? The duplicate contacts could be from those social sites if you had them synced up with your email. If you got to the Setting (gear icon in the top right-hand corner) and then go to Email Settings> Accounts do you only have your email account listed or are any other profiles listed there?
