Comcast/Xfinity's email address policy

Is my understanding of the following points correct?

  1. It is no longer possible to create a new Comcast.net email address, not even for the Primary user ID
  2. It is no longer possible to modify an existing Comcast.net email address
  3. If you don't have a Comcast.net email address, you can't open https://connect.xfinity.com
  4. If you don't have a Comcast.net email address, attempting to open https://connect.xfinity.com doesn't tell you that you can't do that. Instead, it redirects to https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/account-email-information which fails to explain what is happening
  5. The Xfinity Verified Email logo only works in https://connect.xfinity.com, only for Comcast.net email addresses. It does not work in 3rd party email programs or apps
  6. Preventing creation of new Comcast.net email addresses has also killed https://connect.xfinity.com and the Xfinity Verified Email logo for those users now forced to use 3rd party email addresses

IMHO to save a few pennies, the company has shot itself in the foot, disabled a component of email security, and done a great disservice to its customers.

If I'm wrong about any of these or have overlooked something, please let me know!

@BruceW I'll mostly address 5/6.  The traditional red "Verified Logo" works only in XC, that part is correct.  However, our MTA platform now supports BIMI, which coupled with an iOS device allows messages which have proper authentication to display an associated logo.  Some of the messages (trying to get others to switch) which are from Xfinity will get a logo.  Unfortunately, the iOS Mail App is the only third-party client which currently supports BIMI in this way (that I'm aware of).  You would also see other logos from other companies which pass sufficient checks as well.  So, for messages that are from things like updates.xfinity.com, you should see a logo.  For the ones coming from "alerts.comcast.net", there will not be a BIMI logo (and they're the ones I'm trying to get to switch).

I believe you're correct for 1-4.  I've asked for feedback from some others.

@XfinityAlex: Thank you for your comments. I was not familiar with BIMI. Although it doesn't appear to correct all the problems that flowed from the decision to stop issuing new Comcast.net email addresses, it sounds promising and I'm glad to hear that Comcast/Xfinity is adopting it. Now if only the other players handling email and writing email programs and apps would recognize the importance of Verified Email. Without it, users are hard pressed to determine if messages actually originate from the senders they claim to originate from. Too many have lost too much money and suffered too much heartache because of email scammers!

@BruceW I should note, if you're unable to use comcast.net, but instead opt to use Gmail/Yahoo for your Xfinity notices, the BIMI logos should work there as well (assuming you use their mobile apps).

You can get a better idea of who supports BIMI at bimigroup.org
