Can't connect to smtp server.

Kept getting send fail on a message in Apple Mail on my MacBook. When I run Apple's Mail Connection Doctor and I get "Could not connect to this SMTP server." I tried deleting the account and reinstalling it. I tried restarting the computer. Same result.

I am able to send messages from my phone and from web mail.

Understand this can be a difficult problem to diagnose and fix.

Help appreciated.

The first thing to do is to open the settings on your phone and the Apple Mail app on your MacBook and ensure they are the same. Especially check the outgoing port number and incoming port number (which will typically be different). Your phone must have the correct values, so stick with those. Web-based mail often bypasses those and uses straight SSL connections from the browser. See https://support.apple.com/guide/mail/change-server-settings-cpmlprefacctadv/mac and https://support.apple.com/guide/mail/change-outgoing-server-settings-cpmlprefsmtpserver/mac. Almost all mail servers will require you to connect with TLS/SSL, so expect to enable that. I wish I could give you real examples, but I haven't used a Mac in years.

@NoGoodNamesLeft4Me Thanks. Really appreciate the suggestions. Unfortunately I didn't get to use them. After I started up my system the next day Mail was able to connect to smtp and it's been working fine since then.
