Using Cox modem on Xfinity ended up closing all accounts.

Today I did my final attend phone call to Xfinity to fix my speed issues. Where I think physical addresses in Mac addresses got mixed for having many units on the same account. I was using a Cox modem at the unit. I was having speed issues with. While I was trying to explain myself, the whole conversation turned into an argument where Xfinity claimed that was their modem, When I had to start paying for it or return it back to them as soon as possible or this could even go to a collection. I never purchased the modern rented one or at least one before from Xfinity for this adress. And the Cox modem I did find at my business location. After the conversation, turning into a full argument, I end up closing all my accounts with Xfinity. Here I’m I am trying to understand if a Cox modem belongs to Xfinity? or why the lady on the phone was making very old claims?
