Upgrade Gateway

Hi,

I received this text today.

Hi Sara, it's Xfinity Assistant.

We've noticed that you have an older Xfinity Gateway at ___hid my addrese___ and recommend upgrading it to get the best in-home WiFi. With your new Gateway, you can count on a reliable connection for all your devices, even when everyone's online.

Would you like us to ship you a new Gateway at no additional cost?

1 - Ship me a new Xfinity Gateway

2 - No, I'm not interested

is this a fully free thing to do? How do I return the old. Will my monthly bill increase?

user_j8tec8 Hi there! Yes, the Gateway upgrade offer in that text is free — there’s no extra cost for the new equipment and it won’t increase your monthly bill. Once the new Gateway arrives, you’ll just need to return the old one, so it’s cleared from your account. The easiest way is to drop it off at a UPS Store or Xfinity service center. We’ll provide the details with the shipment, so you know exactly what to do.

... no additional cost ...

I always get queasy when Comcast/Xfinity says something is "free". In this case, "free" means "If you are already paying for a gateway, the replacement device will be charged at the same rate." In order words, not "no cost (free)", but as stated, at "no additional cost" (for now). In some existing and some newer plans a gateway is "included". Do "no additional cost" and "included" really mean "free"? Or do they mean "won't show up on your bill as a separate item because we included the cost as part of your package." Only Comcast/Xfinity knows, and they keep the truth to themselves.
