Target scam still going around

I got a call from a number claiming to be Xfinity offering a promotion discount with Target. Pay 1 year upfront (600$), and then my bill would be 50$ a month for 2 years after the first year.

Several red flags here:

1) wanting to be paid with prepaid gift cards of any kind

2) provided a number for xfinity billing dept that did not match any of the numbers I could find online

3) Did not send a text with authorization code to access xfinity account

4) They were very pushy when I said that I would not be able to get the prepaid cards until tomorrow (I knew it was a scam already)

The big concern I had about this call was:

1) They had my personal information

2) They new my autopayment schedule and how much was due on my next payment and previous payment

3) They were able to post a payment to my xfinity account (they use a fake bank account and the payment will bounce in a day or 2 and you get stuck with additional charges and making the payment as well)

I called Xfinity and spoke to their security team to create a ticket to have this payment removed from my account so that I would not be charged a bounced payment fee or have it mess up my autopayment schedule.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We take security and the protection of our customers' personal information very seriously, and I’m so sorry you experienced this scam attempt.

The situation you described has several clear red flags, and you did the right thing by identifying them and reaching out to our security team. For clarity and to help protect others, here are a few important points to keep in mind:

- Xfinity will never ask for payments through prepaid gift cards or unconventional payment methods.
- Official Xfinity communications will always come from verified channels.
- Our billing department numbers can always be confirmed through our official website or your account dashboard.

Since you mentioned they had personal details about your payments, it’s important that we fully investigate this incident. It sounds like you’ve already connected with our security team and created a ticket, which is the right step to ensure any fraudulent activity is addressed.

For further protection:

  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) on your Xfinity account if you haven’t already.
  • Monitor Your Account Activity for any unusual activity.
  • Report Suspicious Calls directly to our dedicated security team to aid in ongoing investigations.

We truly appreciate you reporting this and helping keep the community informed. If you need any further assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out directly—I’m here to help.

Ditto — I received the same scam on 1/7/2025. — I didn’t bite but was on the fence until I was told that I had to “act today” (buying Target gift cards and relaying the numbers back to them). — The interesting part was that I was on hold with Xfinity waiting for an agent by way of their official web site. That’s when I got the cell phone call and VM message for the 50% target scam. — In the discussion with the scammer (my bad), he knew my phone number, the last 4 digits of my credit card, my monthly rate, and was able to post a charge of $9.99 to my Xfinity bill. All to prove that he was a agent for Xfinity. — again — I didn’t bite and Xfinity backed out the $9.99 charge. — Xfinity has a leak, I am sure the scammer got this information from my online information while waiting for a legitimate Xfinity telemarketer.
