New fiber optic in my neighborhood

ATT is installing fiber optic cable in my subdivision. Will I am able to use it for higher speeds? Will all internet providers be able to use that cable? Will the old copper cable become inactive? Thanks

Thank you for reaching out with some fantastic questions, @rdorrance

We do only deliver our services over our own infrastructure.

We're excited to bring a new all-Internet Protocol (IP) technology, fiber-only network known as EPON (or Ethernet Passive Optical Network) to some communities in your area! If your community has arranged for Comcast to build this new network, you'll have a faster internet connection, with fast download and dramatically faster upload speeds, access to more advanced TV service and a more reliable network.

We look forward to giving you the best service possible and making your entertainment experience better in the future.

@XfinityKimberlyB Thank you for the prompt answer to my initial question. I have a followup. The new fiber optic cable is going into my subdivision now. But the old infrastructure, the copper cable, has been in place for many years. I think all the numerous different internet providers here are using this same copper cable, regardless of who installed it 20 some years ago. Am I wrong? Does every provider have their own cable infrastructure in the ground of the subdivision? Are you saying that because ATT is installing the new fiber optic infrastructure, only ATT customers will be able to use it? Thank you!

@rdorrance Typically, yes each company will use their own, unless they make an agreement together. We can not speak to AT&T cables and who they let use it, but we use our own Fiber lines.

I no longer work for Comcast.

How long does it take? My service has been out 6 hours. I lost a days pay because I didn't get advanced notice

@rdorrance   Please note that Fiber Optical cables require all the older cables, outside and inside, to the cable box.

I have had DSL through our phone company for a few years. No issues with the service.
