Is a Motorola MT8733 WiFi 6 Router + Multi-Gig Cable Modem with DOCSIS 3.1 compatible with an Xfinity Xi6 wireless box?

Is a Motorola MT8733 WiFi 6 Router + Multi-Gig Cable Modem with DOCSIS 3.1 compatible with an Xfinity Xi6 wireless box? I spoke to TWO DIFFERENT Xfinity representatives over the phone today. One assured me that it was, informing me that, contrary to what I may have read or heard, it isn't necessary to rent a modem from Xfinity to have an Xi6 box shipped to me. Another representative I just spoke to told me that the person I spoke to earlier today had "bad information" and that indeed I need to rent a compatible modem from Xfinity. So what is it then?

Hello @user_409d7f I'm sorry for the confusing details. If you are upgrading from Xfinity Flex you are able to use the wireless cable box with your owned modem. An additional cable box may also be needed to act as the Primary X1 device. You can check here for more specifics on using the wireless cable boxes. Do you currently have a wireless device?

I currently have Xfinity Triple Play. So I have to change my plan to Xfinity Flex and then upgrade to the Xi6 wireless box?

@user_409d7f Based on the services you mentioned you currently have, in order to use a Xi6 wireless box you will need to have one box with a coax connected and you also need to have a rented modem in order to user the xi6. At this time with the modem you mentioned you would not be able to use the Xi6 wireless cable box.

If you decided to have an internet only plan and have flex service then you would be able to have the Xi6 with the option of upgrading to choice from flex using your own Motorola MT8733.

I do have Xfinity Triple Play (TV, Internet, and Phone). So the one (additional) box is coax connected to the rented modem (which is then coax connected to the wall outlet)? What type of box with coax connected is needed (I do have an XG1v4-A with coax cable in and out connections that was mailed to me.)? Would I need a coax splitter for this? What brand/type of rented modem I need to rent? Would it be possible to outright buy a Triple Play compatible modem that would work with the scenario you described above?

In addition, I would need internet service via Wifi in order  to work from home along with connecting to my other electronic devices.

You have the correct box (XG1V4-A) in order to host a Xi6 with your current services, the only thing missing would be the rental modem. We do not sell them, it would be a monthly rental fee on the account.

If you were to rent a gateway with would have Wi-Fi capabilities for you to use for various devices and working.
