“Free” ipad offer [Edited]

We were scammed into purchacing an iPad. We were told it was an incentive/gift fir getting Comcast internet. Only to realize too late that we were being charged about $45/month for installments on the iPad and an xfinity mobile line attached to the ipad. I was on the phone for hours yestsrday being told there was nothing they could do and that I consented to this. I asked for proof of my consent (a signed contract or phone call recording) and was told they do not have these. I was told a supervisor would call me back in 1-2 hours. I asked for a direct line to call back if I did not hear from a supervisor and was told “they will 100% call you back”. It is the next day and still no call. [Edited: "Solicitation"].

Yeah so as soon as I saw my upcoming mobile charge, I called them to cancel my mine asap. Then just returned the ipad to the nearest xfinity store. No questions asked.

The agent never mentioned anything mobile charge, he just said both for the price of $45/mo and if I cancel I can keep the ipad. It doesn't help that it's a bunch of indians who's english is not good so maybe he couldn't explain it properly.

Anyways, I'll be happy to go back to the 55/mo.

I think a lot of people are overreacting here because they got offered a legitimately good deal -- and Xfinity actually has a solid bundling discount ($40) - and your mind just can't process it.  We're so used to being taken advantage of by telecomm cos that you assume any good deal is a scam.

On ID THEFT: Keep in mind, you're talking to someone from the Xfinity assistant portal, and they sent you a secure link to load your personal info -- you think Comcast is going to have people pirating that, on their watch?  Get real.  It would be front page news.  And MASSIVE FTC FINES.  I'm 0% worried about this.

On actual pricing: Has anyone actually gone through the entire process and looked at their final monthly bill and found that, after all discounts are applied, it is a wildly different amount to the extent you feel scammed?  I see no examples of that.

I got 1200 mbps plus an ipad with data line for $65/mo.  That is the best deal I've ever seen.  And I have it all in writing confirmed multiple times by their agent.  If they are lying, I guess I'll look like a real moron posting about it so confidently but there's also a ridiculous record of it at this point

There was no mention of the data plan. It was not a bundled offer. It was a free latest edition 10th gen cellular iPad + huge plan discounts with no "catch". The "secure link" they shared to capture important customer info had port numbers in the URL and Xfinity would already have the info in their system. Too many red flags. Everything about it seems fishy probably because it was.

@michgo you are wrong. Most of us were told the iPad was completely free, only to find out that it wasn't and we were signed up for a mobile service we didn't ask for. These are agents who are trying to scam us us into things we don't want so that they can get a commission. I was told that my Internet bill would be lower if I agreed to just pay the sales tax on the iPad, that's all, then when I received the bill, I had a 2year monthly amount due for the iPad and a mobile bill that I never even agreed to. <Edited: Be Polite> You can't tell hundreds of us that we didn't experience what we experienced. Corporations lie all the time. Perhaps Xfinity isn't telling these agents to lie, but the agents are lying for a commission. Don't tell us what we experienced.

@michgo you're gonna have two separate bills, you'll see.

@michgo the truth is that YES, many of us are used to guarding ourselves (or attempting to at least) from being scammed. There’s so much going on that who is to say what’s legit or not? It does seem way too good to be true! I’d rather just not risk it. Yes! Risk it. If there was something for me to read and sign, I’d consider it. Idk thank you for sharing though.

It is a scam!!!!!
You will pay $65 first month => $20 mobile service + $25 activation fee + $19.79 device fee
Next month $20 + $19.79 = $39.79
This is for a free iPad.
Then you will see $20 discounts on your internet service

So, question is, how is $40 same as $20. Someone did bad at math.

You better off getting an iPad from an electronics store. May even earn some discounts and rewards that way.

DO NOT FALL FOR THIS DEAL.

I was offered a "free" Ipad back in June, which is absolutely not the case. You will be paying a service fee and a device fee for 24 months to pay it off. If you currently have just the internet, you will be paying for both, the internet and the Xfinity Mobile. Their sales people lied to me (or misinformed, whichever you prefer), and I was trying to get that fixed with Comcast for the last three months. I even want to send back the device not to deal with this anymore, but "the return window is 14 days". They will lie to you about a promotion, and then hide behind their policies and won't be able to do anything. You will not to able to return the device, you will have to pay over $400 for it over 24 months even if you cancel the service. I am looking for help online, and a way to sue them.

@user_l4u1lq Thanks for posting more details.
I said NO to the deal I was offered because it sounded suspicious, but 'm still trying to figure out the specifics, in case I get that offer in the future.
It sounds like you DIDN'T have a MOBILE PLAN before this, right?
When I calculate $400 over 2 years, it's about $17/month.
How much did your monthly bill increase because of the changes that were made?
thanks.

BTW This behavior is still happening as of 9/24/2024. During a chat with the "Xfinity Assistant" I was offered the "Free iPad" (From the transcript):

Agent (11:31 pm): Meanwhile, as I can see your account is eligible to get brand new iPad absolutely free

Agent (11:32 pm): You will get the new iPad within the same bill

me: How does that work?

Agent (11:33 pm): Let me explain everything for you

Agent (11:34 pm): It will be bundled in your same monthly of $75 per month which will be same for next 12 months

Agent (11:34 pm): you will get a brand new ipad 10th gen from our end with no monthly extra charge

Agent (11:34 pm): you are eligible for this and we just need to add it on your account.

Me: Is there an extra contract?

Agent (11:36 pm): no there is no contract at all.

It is disturbing enough that it is still happening, but that it is happening from official Xfinity employees. Let's be crystal clear: This is being propagated and approved of by Xfinity/Comcast to cheat their own customers. This isn't some outside party doing this. Customers are being scammed by the very company they are paying for service. It is unconscionable.

This happened to me. I was told my bill would be $65 with a free iPad. It's not. It is $75 + $30 a month for the iPad. This is a huge scam! Support needs to do something about this!

The thing is that they are aware! It’s their doing. These companies are legit and don’t have legit practices. There’s a big tech company that had a deal if you buy their discounted laptop, they’d gift $150. They actually discounted 150 off the laptop, then charged me 150. Really that’s no deal. I informed them to cancel everything and take the gift card back. They canceled and Im stuck with the 150 “gift card” that can only be used on their products. I said all of that to say this, they’re not being forthcoming. There’s a fine print that’s nowhere to read. Don’t trust them when they start saying “I assure you” and “please take my word”, scammers lingo.

Same here. It’s a big lie!! I’m really angry. It’s a corporates scam.

This happened to me in June, so they are still up to the same tricks.  They explained everything multiple times when I signed up and when I was reading over everything, it looked right, but they now say they don't have copies of the agreements I signed.

I was lied to by the sales agent.  I was lied to by multiple support agents after wasting tons of time.

I'm going to return the iPad because they say that I'm eligible for the $40 I was promised, but only if it is a cell phone activation -- not a mobile iPad -- which I was repeatedly told in the past I was eligible for.

This just happened to me. I changed my plan and the guy told me he not only lowered my bill but I also receive a free iPad for being a loyal customer.  I was very skeptical and he assured me it was legit, no contract and not to worry it wasn’t attached to a mobile plan.
I knew not to fall for it but I freaking did.  Only because he said this was the lowest plan I could get to lower my bill and again the iPad is a free gift know strings or commitment.   I saved the entire conversation.    Now I have to wait for iPad to arrive and return it to get my money back.   Yep he said the money I paid was for starting my new plan service.       Xfinity  can I have a big discount for the scam and inconvenience this has caused.     At least the person who I spoke to in billing was super sympathetic and apologetic for what took place.

@user_gm0m0f We appreciate you taking the time to reach out to us and let us know about the iPad offer. This is definitely never the experience we want for our valued customers. Oh My GAWD...4 pages of people who experienced the same thing I just did!  In the end, I did not consent because the link said the contract for internet was for two years, but the promotional rate was only for 12 months.  I am disappointed because I have been with comcast for almost 12 years.  I was looking to lower my rate so I could stay with them.  Instead, I was pressured by THREE different sales reps to take the ipad offer.  So Sad because now I have to switch to metronet and go through the PITA of changing all the wifi devices :/

I just screenshotted all the conversations with all three agents so I can submit a complaint to the FTC.  It won't be the first one I've submitted either!

@user_iuetvy Yeah, it would be nice if there was an update from Xfinity with a more clear-cut answer--it seems this has been happening for years.
The last rep. said "This is definitely never the experience we want for our valued customers," but what steps are being taken to prevent this in the future? I'd settle for a better explanation of how this is NOT a dishonest sales tactic.

This happened to me and the Executive Resolutions team won’t admit fault, even though it is well documented that this is happening to other people and I know for a fact the agent I spoke to online to set everything up initially assured me the mobile offer of $40 off applied to the iPad.

[Edited: "Solicitation"]

I’m keeping the iPad because I bought accessories and it isn’t any cheaper elsewhere, but the Executive Resolutions team saying that the evidence doesn’t support my claim is bunk.  Their agents are telling people they can get free iPads.

I nearly got [Edited: "Language"] into this promotion too. Fortunately my ipad got lost in the mail and they had to cancel the order. So I decided not to reorder it and they canceled the line

And here is the prove. Xfinity is lying to us

1 Message

just received the same offer 10/23/24. I tried calling to reduce my $146 bill and was offered this deal with a iPad for $110/mo. I wasn’t too thrilled about it because it only brought down my bill $36 but hey I get a “free” iPad that I have to pay $40/mo for included in the $110. Was told that was the cheapest offer they had after requesting my old plan($85/mo). Took the deal bc i didn’t want to pay almost $150 a month for WiFi. Received my iPad today & saw the xfinity mobile card with it that I don’t remember signing up for. So I came online to see if I was getting screwed over & come to find out everyone was saying it was a scam. Why was everyone offered the same deal at half the price I’m paying? Was told I would get a credit to my account so I won’t pay anything extra on my next bill only to still see $146 pending in my account. Don’t even know if I want to open this iPad. Not happy.

@user_0mfpf0 I sent the iPad back

its all a bunch of lies.  The iIPAD is a line of service with xfinity mobile.  You are obligated to pay for service for two years.

Watch your bank statements.  I had fraud charges soon after. I’m still fighting to get this taken care of

@user_0mfpf0

After this happened to me,  I had my identity stolen.

I have someone’s bank account attached to my xfinity account and when I made a payment it got reversed to the scammers bank account. I’m still fighting to get this fixed.  I’m pissed because xfinity said the fraud department is still investigating.  In the mean time the scammers bank account is still attached to my xfinity account and they won’t do anything about it .

@user_0mfpf0 Thanks for posting. Thee thing is, not EVERYONE is saying it's a scam. I think everyone agrees that the offer is not consistent, transparent, and even deceptive, but I remember Xfinity implying that it was a legitimate offer and a customer saying that it was a real discount, just not as good as it sounded.
If you decide to keep the iPad, I'm curious to find out if your bill goes up instead of down. That part isn't clear to me after reading all of these posts (I turned down the offer myself, but wonder if I would accept it in the future).
It sounds like one of those things where the company expects people will ask for their money back but hope to cash in on those who just take the loss.
Either way, for Xfinity not to put an end to this and/or show the actual offer in writing is shady.

Just got off the xfinity assistant.  This was what he offered ‘I have an amazing deal for you! You will get 300 Mbps speed with a rental modem and an Apple ipad 10th generation, all included for just $35 per month.  So here, you will save $10 from the current package and you will receive an ipad.  Saving $120 a year and with that you will be able  to get an ipad’.

I immediately googled and got to this forum.  Told him there is ‘no free lunch’ and asked him after we’re done to read this forum!!  He was very persistent.  How is such a big company allowed to do this is crazy.  Remember, if its too good to be true, its a SCAM!!!
