EXTREME Data Usage Changes

I can't believe this is my 3rd post about internet issues in less than a year. I have a massive data usage increase. I used to be doing about 1200GB and only went over 3 times in the last 5 years! However when I realized I had an extremely OLD plan with TV that I never used, so I got rid of it. Well low and behold here we are 3 months after that and my data has spiked significantly in those months.

Went in to store see if they could figure out why and the person said there is no way on their end they can see. Only 5 devices are connected to my wifi, I have a very secure password and I change it about every 3 months so, I have VPN on all devices, I also have full security on my devices. The spike went from me only doing 1 to 15GB over to 598GB or more over a month. Within the last 3 days my usage shows I have used over 585GB which is severely impossible as we were gone all day Saturday and Sunday an NOBODY WAS HOM AND ALL DEVICES WERE TURNED OFF.

Yes we stream mostly everything and we game however NONE OF OUR HABITS HAVE CHANGED IN THE PAST YEAR OF USAGE!!!!!! I can not stress this enough because if one more person tells me to check my usage like I have no clue what I am talking about I WILL CANCEL my service. I have been a customer for 7 years and this is ridiculous. My phone says about 54GB of data, my husbands phone is about 75GB my computer is at 125GB and our Xbox is at 300GB, TV is 200GB, roommates phone is 66GB. Crazy how none of this adds up.

No one ever comes to our house so we are the only people with the password. I would have to be streaming everything all at once all day to hit these "supposed" data increase.

I got so mad on Friday when I went in that I just caved and upgraded my plan to unlimited but now I am out over $200 due to this fake scam. No one was helpful and these increases should be illegal.

DO NOT TELL ME THAT I NEED TO DO PEER TO PEER CHAT BECAUSE I WILL LOSE MY MIND! I WILL ALSO NEVER BUY AN XFINITY ROUTER AS I HAVE HAD MINE WITH NO ISSUES FOR OVER 3 YEARS!

Something needs to be done because I have been reading threads and no one has had a fix.

Hi @t0nightweride

Here are some ways your data usage could increase.

Streaming High-Definition (HD) Videos: Streaming services like Netflix, YouTube, and Amazon Prime Video offer content in different quality settings. Watching videos in high-definition or 4K resolution can consume large amounts of data quickly. Consider adjusting the video quality settings or downloading content for offline viewing to reduce data usage.

Online Gaming: Online gaming can require a substantial amount of data, especially for multiplayer games that involve real-time interactions. Updates, patches, and downloads for games can also be data-intensive. Monitoring your gaming data usage and limiting downloads during peak usage times can help manage data consumption.

Cloud Backup and Sync: If you use cloud services like Google Drive, Dropbox, or iCloud to back up and sync your files, large uploads or constant synchronization can consume significant data. Review the settings of these services to optimize data usage, such as selective syncing or limiting uploads to Wi-Fi connections only.

Video Conferencing and Online Meetings: Platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Skype use video and audio data for video conferencing and online meetings. The quality settings, number of participants, and duration of the meetings can impact data usage. Consider adjusting video quality or using audio-only options when possible.

Software Updates and Downloads: Automatic software updates on your devices or applications can consume substantial amounts of data, especially for operating system updates or large software installations. Schedule downloads and updates during periods of unlimited or lower-cost data usage to minimize impact.

To manage your internet data usage effectively, consider monitoring your data consumption through your modem tracking tools and adjusting settings on devices and applications to optimize data usage.

@XfinityMikeB

Cool thanks for explaining the obvious! Really helpful guys! Gold Star!

I don't know if people at xfinity actually read the posts. I HAVE NOT CHANGED MY HABITS IN YEARS. WE PLAY THE SAME GAMES, WATCH THE SAME AMOUNT OF STREAMING, NOTHING AND I LITERALLY DO MEAN OUR HABITS HAVE NOT CHANGED.

I DO NOT have automatic updates on anything, everything I own has manual updates set up so I know I am not going over. I do not have a backup to cloud on anything but my phone as I have an external hard drive I back everything up to.

I do not have a camera at home to video conference so that isn't it. We DO NOT watch much when it comes to streaming services as we are a mostly video game household and we DO NOT cloud game everything is directly installed into our devices.

Since obviously people can't understand I have include the usage for the past few months.

You are gonna tell me that I conveniently started using more data when I switched my plan in February to make my bill lower and take off an old promo. Somehow I started changing my habits to where I was using 598GB more than I ever had for 3 months in a row? I hope xfinity is happy doing nothing for me I have never missed a payment and have been a loyal customer for years and this is how they repay me, FORCING MY HAND to upgrade to unlimited data because their meter is broken.

I KNOW FOR A FACT I DO NOT USE THIS MUCH DATA!

@t0nightweride We do understand your frustrations with the situation, and we would like to take a deeper look into the data usage issue with you. If you could please send a direct message with your name and complete service address, we can look into this with you further.

To send a "Direct Message" to Xfinity Support:

Click "Sign In" if necessary

Click the "Direct Messaging" icon or https://comca.st/3EqVMu7

Click the "New message" (pencil and paper) icon

The "To:" line prompts you to "Type the name of a person". Instead, type "Xfinity Support" there

 - As you are typing a drop-down list appears. Select "Xfinity Support" from that list

 - An "Xfinity Support" graphic replaces the "To:" line

Type your message in the text area near the bottom of the window

Press Enter to send it

I no longer work for Comcast.

@t0nightweride

If you add up all the numbers you posted it comes out to over 800GB.  Just an FYI.
