Confused about passwords to use when Comcast emails are "migrated" to Yahoo

I received the invite to move to Yahoo and I am reviewing the instructions at

 https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN36803.html

Part of the initial steps for migration is creating a NEW STRONG PASSWORD

  • One has to sign in at yahoo.com with one’s full Comcast.net email address and password
  • as shown in first video https://s.aolcdn.com/membership/help/000015905/xfinitymovetoyahoomail.mp4

at minute 1:30, one is directed to create a “new strong password for your account”.

Question:  What is this password for and when is this password supposed to be used? Is this a new password for the Yahoo email account being migrated from Comcast?? Does this mean that once this is entered, this password needs to be used for any future access for this email account, INCLUDING when adding Yahoo mail to Apple Mail on a Mac?   I am confused by the many different passwords during this transition, as later on I am told that one has to also create an App password for Apple mail (NOT icloud mail which I do NOT use). Can someone please help and clarify what the "new strong password" is for vs. the one time "app password" for Apple Mail?   I hope that I will be notified if an answer will be posted. Thanks.

Good afternoon user_r4rfzq! You would log in with your current existing Xfinity email, and you current email password for the transition. Please let us know if you require additional assistance, or have additional questions.

Thank you. Hopefully the migration will work out and mail will work without problems after the migration.  With 3 vendors in the loop, hopefully there will be no finger pointing and if problems happen, proper support will be available from each vendor, as we didn't ask for this migration. If I have other questions, I will return.

The video for setting up 3rd party email (e.g. Apple mail) provided by Comcast at

https://s.aolcdn.com/membership/help/000015905/xfinityaddtoapplemail.mp4

states that:

  • You'll see a screen to sign in to Yahoo. Enter your full Comcast.net email address (make sure to include the @comcast.net part) and then click Next.
  • Enter your Comcast.net email account password and then click Next.

Password: If your Comcast.net password does not work with your third-party email client, you may need to generate and use an app password. See the "How to generate an app password" section to learn how to get an app password.

Questions:

1. These instructions state that I should use the Comcast password (not the new strong password just generated). Which password should I use when setting up the Yahoo account in Apple Mail?

2. Why wouldn't the password work with the third-party email and where would I have to use the one time app password?

3. If an app password would be required, and I would use that in Apple mail when setting up the account, which password would I have to use for any next time when I would want to check my mail for this account in Yahoo (not Apple Mail).

Please clarify. Thanks.

@user_r4rfzq I am still a little confused....after the migration, are we going to have to go into the Apple mail settings

and change the outgoing and incoming mail passwords to the new stronger one?

tbill1, these instructions provided to us by Comcast are not clear, that's why I am asking the questions.

Hopefully Comcast support can clarify which passwords should be used where and answer my 3 above questions, answers required to understand how to setup Apple mail after this migration. I am sure there are many other Comcast customers who are equally confused.

Please address my specific questions AFTER reading the thread. if you will do that, you will see that the link you provided is the same one I started with.

Please do not ignore the fact that as I mentioned, the information provided by Comcast for this migration is confusing. Please do not send answers for the sake of providing an answer. READ the thread and clarify what I asked about the passwords to be used. If you do not know the answer, ask someone who knows.

WE CANNOT MIGRATE BY TRYING TO GUESS WHAT THE INSTRUCTIONS MEAN. Help was promised.
