Can I use a router that someone else left?

I just moved into an apartment and the old renter did not take their router with them. They gifted it to us, but didn’t leave any information. Can I use their Xfinity router with a new plan, my plan? Or do I need to order new equipment?

What model of router is it?

If it's an Xfinity router, no.  That's rental equipment and Xfinity owns it.  It would be nice of you to return it to Comcast for them as they'll be charged if Comcast doesn't get it back.  If it's a customer owned router, just check the manufacturer's web site for specs and instructions on doing a reset to factory defaults and you can use it if it meets the requirements for your plan.  I would definitely factory reset any gifted/left behind equipment before using it just for security reasons.

It is an xFi I believe. I’d like to talk to a rep about it if possible. The previous renters were told to leave the equipment by Xfinity. That’s why it was Sudo-gifted to us

Concern moved here to the Customer Service help section for greater exposure to Comcast corporate employees (The Digital Care Team) for assistance.

@user_gyzxm7 Hi there! Thanks for taking the time to create a post in reagrds to the modem that was left for you. Our team can help. Unfortunately, if it is a Xfinity branded modem, it cannot be used for your account. However, if it was a router that was owned by the previous tenant, we may be able to use it.

Can you tell us the make and model of it?
