Recording Programs on TV GO Channels

Why do 'record options' come up on some TV GO channels for programming being shown and not on other TV GO channels?

srtowens Thank you for reaching out! Do you have any particular channel examples of not being able to record TV Go Channels? Also, are you seeing any error messages, or codes?

I like old western TV shows and movies.  A couple of examples of where you, or at least I, cannot record a specific episode off of a 'TV GO' channel would be the UNIWS and CWBYW 'TV GO' channels.  They do not have a channel number in my streaming service.  When you select an episode the only options that come up are 'Watch' and 'Series Info'.  If you click on 'Series Info' you can get to an option to record the entire series, but not that particular episode that you originally clicked on, on the 'TV GO' channel.  Then it, I assume, will just record any and all episodes off the normal channels like on the INSP or GRIT western channels, i.e., normal cable or over the air digital channels included in my program package and no episode off the 'TV GO' channels.  Which brings up another issue in that Comcast/xFinity still has never provided a means to record a series by season, so when you select 'Record Series' and the series maybe ran for 7 seasons, you just get a mish-mash of all episodes recorded in no particular order, which is a pain if you are trying to follow a series season by season.

@srtowens In most cases, the Record option only appears on TV GO channels when the program and channel are eligible for Xfinity DVR recording. Not all TV GO channels have the same recording rights.

Some common reasons you'll see the option on some TV GO channels but not others:

  • Programming rights vary by network. Some networks allow cloud DVR recording, while others restrict it due to licensing agreements.
  • The channel may be streaming-only. Certain TV GO channels are available for live streaming but don't support DVR functionality.
  • Sports, special events, or on-demand content may have recording restrictions even if the channel itself is normally recordable.
  • Device or app limitations can occasionally affect whether the Record button appears, although this is less common.
  • Subscription and entitlement differences can also play a role; some channels may be viewable but not eligible for recording under your particular package

So basically the subscriber (customer) is 'ripped-off' as usual!

srtowens, Most of the channels we provide to you are owned by media companies other than Comcast. We obtain the rights to carry channels according to agreements (or contracts) with those companies. This includes recording options.

Well Richard, since you asked, one thing Comcast/xFinity really needs to work on related to the recording/DVR side is allowing the user to record TV series by season.  Also you should be able to set a master 'record early start/late stop times' to be used for all recordings, as opposed to having to set manually for each individual recording.  I was a long time DirecTV customer for years before deciding to cut the traditional cable/satellite cord/receiver box and switch to 100% streaming, and you could do both of those things years ago with DirecTV.

thanks, srtowens
