big 10 west coast blackout

Hello please provide an update on the timeline to resolve the blackout of the Big10 network as we are now well into Football, Volleyball, and Soccer season-we paid extra to upgrade our package to get the Big10 network as our alma mater's games are the main reason we subscribe to Xfinity.  We realize Fox is responsible for choosing to blackout the games, however since we are paying for a premium package to gain this network we feel you are responsible for negotiating a solution.  We would rather not shop around for other media solutions which include the UW games and it would probably lead to an assessment of our home internet service also currently provided by Xfinity.  However this has gone on too long now and if there is not a resolution timeframe we feel as though we need to know that.

Please do not respond with the auto-response that Xfinity does not currently have rights to the UW games which I have seen in other forum inquiries.  We realize that and we have also contacted Fox as we feel their use of Big10 fans as hostages is unreasonable-however they own the rights to these games, and so there is no leverage for us to get movement from them.

I am asking for a timeframe or at least reassurance that Xfinity is currently working on this issue-because without that we will need to begin to take some action.  This question is specifically that-not what the problem is or whose fault.  Thank you-

If this is anything like (choose one or all of: the ACC Network problem from a few years ago, any of the Bally Sports issues, Root Sports, MSG Network), do not expect anything to be said from either side until, and unless, it is resolved. That is just how these negotiations work; neither side will say anything, almost certainly out of fear that the other side would use it to its advantage.

However, do not expect anything to happen any time soon. If by "take action," you mean, "start looking for another service," then my advice to you is to start looking.

user_8yo40j Games exclusive to Big 10 Network for several college teams are not available through Xfinity or Comcast Business at this time. We do not have the rights, currently, to broadcast games airing on Big 10 Network for the following teams:
University of California Los Angeles (UCLA)
University of Oregon (U of O)
University of Washington (UW)
University of Southern California (USC)
We appreciate your understanding.

Most of the games for these universities may be available on other channels, networks, or streaming platforms.

Customers can:

Say “UCLA football” (or something similar) into their Xfinity Voice Remote.
Use the C button on their Xfinity Voice Remote  to launch the X1 Sports app.
Use the on-screen guide to find affected games that may be available on other channels.

Shame on you Comcast!!  I pay big bucks to stay with your service, much to the chagrin of my wife who says I should leave.  Make a deal with the Big 10!

@XfinityWilliam

This does not answer the question I very specifically asked which is for a timeline to anticipate an agreement between Comcast/Xfinity and Fox/Big10 Network to come to an agreement concerning the West Coast teams, or at least some assurance that Comcast/Xfinity is working on it.

Dodging that question implies Xfinity/Comcast is not working on it and content with the situation, and that there is an infinite timeline to resolve it- or never.

Please clarify.

Thank you

@user_8yo40j The "Xfinity drones" don't know the answer any more than anyone else does. Like I said, it is standard operating procedure for neither side in the negotiation to say anything, and I mean anything, until (and unless) a deal is reached. The best answer to "What is the timeline for a resolution?" is almost certainly, "As soon as Big Ten Network accepts our reasonable offer" if you're Comcast, and, "As soon as Comcast accepts our more than reasonable terms" if you're BTN. (You can replace "Big Ten Network" with "Chicago Sports Network" if you live in Illinois; the answer is the same.)

@XfinityWilliam The fact remains that you're calling something the BTN that is not the full BTN, so if you're not going to provide it in full, you should at least reduce the price. Enough of the greed -- this is how you lose customers.

What I don’t understand is why are the away games also blacked out?  Do the broadcast rights not go with the home team?  Last year if one of the 4 schools was playing at a B1G school, the game would have been shown on BTN just as any rights are determined through the home team.  Also blacking out the away games is taking away coverage that we would have had last year, and we are paying the same rate (or more).  This is insane and frustrating!!  Definitely time to look at other streaming options!!!

@user_mznl4h - when did Big Ten Network have the rights to a game when a non-Big Ten team was the home team? One of the conditions of being in the Big Ten is that the conference controls the school's TV rights - not the school. This is probably the main reason Notre Dame is an independent in football while an ACC member in pretty much everything else.

That was exactly my point.  And if they wanted to limit the games with the four new schools (for what is still an unjust reason) it should

have only been for the four new schools home games - not when the game is a home game with a traditional B1G school.  Because of this we have less access to games than last year for the 14 traditional B1G schools, and we are still paying the same money!!  This is a unacceptable!

@user_mznl4h The broadcast rights belong to the conference (and, as a result, the channel) - not to the teams themselves (well, unless it's Notre Dame). Any game on the Big Ten Network is subject to the new blackout rule regardless of whether the western team is playing a home game or an away game. BTN could have just as easily have said, "You want to play hardball? Fine - we're cutting off BTN entirely."

From what I understand, this is a Comcast problem, not Fox. Other providers are not blacking out west coast content on BTN, only Comcast, so the problem cannot be a Fox thing, it is Comcast wanting the premiums we customers are paying, while not paying for what is advertised as a package including BTN. And this comes on top of their having reduced the number of channels in their sports package over the years with no corresponding reduction in the sports package pricing.
