Unreturned wireless gateway destroyed in apartment fire

A few days ago, my apartment building burned down, and the wireless gateway equipment I had replaced with my own was destroyed in the fire. I hadn't realized I was supposed to return it since I have the Internet Essentials plan and had gotten the router for free with no rental fee. I only found out when I got a an extra charge in my bill for unreturned equipment last month in June, so I was getting things ready to ship it off.

 

But on July 1st, my apartment caught fire, and the Xfinity router was melted and waterlogged after the firefighters came through. I have to find a new place to live now, on top of renting a storage unit to keep whatever possessions I can salvage in the meanwhile, so if I could get the extra monthly $20 charge for the equipment dropped, it would really help.

I don't know if I should get my internet plan canceled/suspended now though since I'm relying on xfinitywifi hotspots to stay connected and get my life sorted out.
